Why Clarke didn't play in the IPL
"I remember him saying to Modi, 'I'm worth X amount of dollars'. Modi laughed at him."
Matthew Hayden, in his autobiography, writes of a conversation between Michael Clarke and Lalit Modi about playing in the IPL and how the then chairman was dismissive of excessive demands

must be quite the blow to his ego. would be hilarious to have seen it

Given the way Clarke has shown himself at being pretty average in T-20s this is one thing that Modi might have gotten right.

It am all for Clarke plying his trade in the IPL. Especially if it shows his further inadequacies to Hilditch et al.

Indeed. He's carp at both forms of the Limited Over game so Modi did get it right.Josh Carney wrote:Given the way Clarke has shown himself at being pretty average in T-20s this is one thing that Modi might have gotten right.

No, usually Australia appoints a captain who's in great form, which then goes to sh!t when leading the team.

Re: Why Clarke didn't play in the IPL
I know it's been suggested before but they should make White Akela of both limited overs teams (or at least annoint him as the successor as & when needed) and let Clarke sink or swim in the LO teams on his own merits, without the 'next skipper' tag to cloud matters. If he swims, great. If he sinks, let him concentrate on his Test cricket.

Hodge is an ex-Oz cricketer. He became one when he quit the Shield team in the middle of last season.
The precedent you would set by picking a 35yo, half-retired player would be a hell of a lot longer term than any benefit you would get if he did scrape together a couple of handy fifties.

Interestingly (?) Hodge has been named as captain of the all-star XI, or whatever it's called, for the match at the Gabba against some other made-up team. I think this really does make Hodge Dean Jones v2.0, because he was made skipper of Aus A or something like that, when his papers had been marked NTPFAA, wasn't he?horace wrote:phurt...hodge is not allowed to cap Victoria...besides he is retired and having too much fun poking hildegarde and scoring runs
