At huge risk of being called a cheap barsteward (well I dunno how to pay for music downloads anyway) but it seems Limewire is shot.

This is what you get now when you try to fire up said sharing site:

google the artist and song/album name and one of the many file hosts like rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile etc

Thanks chasps. Looks like rapidshare is worth a go.

i dont like torrents. sometimes you have to wait too long for someone to seed it

got a rapidshare pro account. get max download speeds all the time

I use uTorrent for my fave epis of US shows. So how do does one use rapidshare?

Nath's method seems to work but I wasn't quite game to click the download button. My daughters are used to the Limewire type interface. Any suggestions of software that looks a bit similar?

Yeah, I did that with your Google search suggestion, Nath.

I Googled up my favourite Taylor Swift song ( upyours ) and sure enough there was a Free Download button. So that's just accessing a bunch of other people's shared files, is it?

Torrents is your best bet I would say.

I would add though that if you really like an album you should buy it, I have downloaded a lot of music for free but tend to buy the ones that really impress me. If decent albums are not bought then record labels will feel more inclined not to sign really great bands and stick to the tried and tested formula of a beat made by a 2 year old with autotuned singing and clichéd lyrics about shagging some ho, having a nice car or being a gangsta.

Back to torrents though, piratebay seems to be the one that has the best torrents though you can use torrent search engines like torrentz to search multiple torrent hosting sites.

Piratebay is pretty good. I also use isohunt.com

Both give you torrents which you download into a torrent program (i use µTorrent as it seems to be more customisable) and the torrent program manages the download.

But I'd also agree with vilks - generally I use torrents as a "try before I buy" service - nothing worse than wasting £10-£15 on a sh!t band!
