best test captain of the current bunch
Does the following seem a reasonable order?
1 potter (has even improved as a cricketer since becoming captain. does a great job with alow rent team)
2 sniffy (top team and leads well)
3 strauss (fair leader of a mediocre team, wins share of tactical battles
4 donut/punter (average leaders...one underachieves as leader of a very good team, the other struggles to lift an average team)
windies/pak merrygoround caps impossible to rate

Re: best test captain of the current bunch
There is no stand out captain these days.
It may sound biased, but i'd probably go with Strauss. And he's merely good rather than exceptional.
Actually, i'd go with this-
Tactics- Strauss (best of a bad bunch)
Man management- Dhoni
Leading from the front- Smith

What has Vettori done to even remotely suggest he is a good captain? New Zealand have been dire since he took over.

they are always dire...but given the play list on the park at the moment he has done a great job in ensuring they are vaguely competitive esp against the also ran countries such as england and Oz

Horrie, they were just beaten 4-0 by bangladesh FFS. That's not being competitive. That's being completely sh!thouse.

Re: best test captain of the current bunch
Vettori has more than done his bit with bat and ball since becoming captain but I know kiwi fans who don't rate his captaincy at all. Fair enough that he might not have the cattle to reach great heights but there's nothing to suggest he's value added.
Strauss doesn't strike one as being particularly inventive or endowed with tactical nous.
Sooky's running a clique according to Gibbs.
Punter has his problems.
Where do you start with Pakistan? - most have had a go at captaincy.
Gayle appeared to be too lackadaisical and has paid the price.
There is no standout.

Another incisive analysis of their captaincy styles.

Oh dear - quoting Hershelle the Housebrick as 'authority' FFS???
Red, those splinters in your nose are what happens when you scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Nothing special - doesn't know how to set fields for spinners. Has them bowling with boundary riders from the outset - so they get milked for three or four soft runs per over. Mind you, that criticism applies to most of the others as well.

I'm surprised that anyone was obtuse enough to take that seriously.

It's what you chose to offer up as evidence.
And surely even you would realise you've already blown your next million years worth of NSR credits - esp as far nas any discussion of Smith is concerned. Not that NSR bleating has ever counted for a pinch of goatsh1t to me anyway.

Even VettorI's at it: India 22/5 and on the ropes and Laxman calmly plays a ball out to deep extra cover for a single. FFS!
