Australia and the GCS wins Hong Kong Sixes
Tournament details
Six-a-side cricket, even more meaningless than t20? Discuss...Australia win first Hong Kong Sixes title
Australia has won its first Hong Kong Sixes trophy in smashing style overnight, defeating Pakistan in the final on Sunday by two wickets after needing a seemingly impossible 46 of the final eight-ball over.
The squad, coached by Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence senior coach and former international player John Davison, fought back well to win the final after losing their opening round match to South Africa on Saturday afternoon.
Following the loss they went on to defeat Hong Kong and England in the group stage before knocking Sri Lanka out in the semi-final to fight their way into the finale.
Chasing Pakistan’s total of 6-132, Australia – captained by David Warner – smashed 48 runs from the final eight-ball over from Imran Nazir to seal the win.
After the match, Warner said he was ecstatic with the win and the way the team never said die in any situation, even in the seemingly impossible.
“It was amazing. We have that Australian passion when things are against us. It is one of those things – we needed 46 in that last over, but it is cricket and we knew we were always a chance if we backed ourselves,” Warner said.
“I was given the opportunity to come here and lead the side as well and I am just stoked for the boys, they have done so well.
“We fought back hard in the field. We knew our fielding was going to be the key and today was unbelievable,” the New South Welshman said.
Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad set the crowd on fire with a blistering 92 from just 28 deliveries as the favourites knocked up an imposing 132 from their five overs.
But the gallant Aussies never said die with Warner (35 off 11), Glenn Maxwell (34 off 15) and Ryan Carters (31 off eight) disposing of the quality Pakistan attack.
To top off a great series, Glenn Maxwell was named player of the tournament winning the Ben Hollioake Trophy.
The Australian squad competing was:
State Age
David Warner NSW 24
Tim Armstrong NSW 20
Ryan Carters VIC 20
Mark Cleary VIC 30
Matthew Johnston WA 24
Glenn Maxwell VIC 21
Will Sheridan VIC 23
John Davison Coach/Manager
NB: Daniel Christian and Tom Cooper, who were selected in the original squad were unavailable and replaced by David Warner and Mark Cleary.

So they hit every ball off the last 8 ball over for 6?

I think there were some no-balls and/or wides in there.

That's what the scorecard says, six no-balls and 12 wides.

I'm suspecting that wides, in six-a-side cricket would go for extras, and if the no-balls were hit for runs, they'd add up too.

Re: Australia and the GCS wins Hong Kong Sixes
A wide that goes to the boundary might be 5 but bowling 2 of them plus another one on which they take a single sounds very sus.
With no balls, I think a no ball that goes for 4 byes is 1 no ball and 4 bye isn't it?
Either way, the bowler must have bowled at least 5 extra deliveries.
As someone said, very sus.

Re: Australia and the GCS wins Hong Kong Sixes
Not easy to find a detailed account, but here's something that covers a bit of it.
(No balls and wides count for two runs in this form of the game.)
The extras were a No ball hit for four (6 runs), two wides - each with a single run (3 runs each), and a wide that went to the boundary (6 more, which were the winning runs).
Ryan Carters hit a six, a two, and a six. So that's thirty of the runs from three legal deliveries. Not sure how the others were scored.

So 4 extra deliveries in the last over with a 6 a ball needed to win.
