Re: Laxman's corrected average
As an Australian, if I could only choose one batsman over the past 20 years that I would prefer to see back in the pavilion it is Laxman.
He may not be as "great" as a Lara or Tendulkar, but by God he has won a lot of Test matches for India!

Never really performed against us whilst nearly everyone else has so England have never seen the best of him tbh.

Re: Laxman's corrected average
Laxman has played more match winning innings this year than SRT has played in his 21 years.

Re: Laxman's corrected average
He belongs to the small band of exclusive cricketers whose best comes out in the most trying circumstances. Not that he is more talented or anything than Dravid or Tendulkar, but when it comes to mental stakes he appears to be the best equipped.

Re: Laxman's corrected average
Laxman has consistently been the most decisive batsman in the Indian line-up. And yes, that does make him the best. Fans of Laxman's pure sex batsmanship have known this for quite some time. The other Indian batsmen are either style or boredom over substance. Laxman is style and substance. Sehwag and Tendulkar can go around getting all the spectacular praise but the latter has done little other than churn out personal landmarks for a couple of decades. An admirable quality, there's a doughty charm about it, and it certainly distinguishes him as the best of his particular breed, but he is not a decisive batsman.
Laxman > the rest of the Indian batsmen.
He and Zaheer are the two players who have done the most for Indian cricket in the past few years. They've hauled a group of FTBs and medium pace filth monkeys towards the very top. Unfortunately, they're both getting on and India seems to prefer the kinds of players who make personal records their goal rather than actual proper cricketers who win stuff.

There's going to be a series when T, L & D all go past their prime... hopefully mid 2011

Re: Laxman's corrected average
T&L have both already gone through the form slump phase, Dravid's going through his right now. Unfortunately, that one seems permanent. More worried about injuries to be honest, the back injury kept him off the field in the Saffie 2nd innings, and has come back again and again this year.

Re: Laxman's corrected average
yeah. dravid is most likely to be the first one to retire (i am guessing our home series vs the windies). next in line would be laxman depending on his back and then srt (who may well play till 2015 if recent interviews are any indicator, barring injury of course)
laxman should probably be getting into this team by the time his career ends

I might even go so far as to say VVS would be my first batsman chosen in a current World XI.

doubt that CA is right...but it seems that the gutsy VVS nearly always rises to the occasion when the Bannies are in desperate trouble against good teams

Re: Laxman's corrected average
Laxman is important, very very important but it isn't as if the preceeding players are of the calibre of a Bangladesh XI, in which case Laxman would be exposed to the new ball.

Re: Laxman's corrected average
Conversely, if the other players in the top order as great as many say there are why is it always left to VVS to do the hard work when things get difficult?

Re: Laxman's corrected average
Being in the top order, they have to play against the new ball. Laxman can't handle the new ball as well as they do.

Yet when they all fail against it, he consistently is the one to save the team's bacon.
