Re: Celebrity Death List MMXI / The Death Thread 2011
Frank Thornton (age 90 acc to the BBC piece) must now be nearly the sole survivor from the cast. However, he still has a lot of livin' left to ever be older than any of AYBS's 4.3 jokes.
RIP Trevor.

There can't be that many people left who were born in the 1800s.

That would be remarkable. Doubt Methuselah managed it, even metaphorically.

A few as these attest:
Ten verified oldest people living
Oldest Living People by Nation
Interesting to note that there's still one person living in Australia who is older than the country (or at least the Federation) is. Above names (or those who are still around) might be worth bearing in mind for next year's list although they seem to be pretty indestructible.

I think the Book of Genesis gives his age as 979 when he eventually shuffled off this mortal coil but to quote the great Ira Gershwin:
Methuselah lived 900 years,
Methuselah lived 900 years
But what's use of livin'
When no gal 'll give in
To no man that's 900 years.

At the risk of encroaching on another thread you run, Skulls, Sachin T (the one that's still very much alive on the basis of yesterday's performance albeit in a losing cause) completed the remarkable feat last year of playing international cricket in 4 separate calendar decades equalling the record of Sir Jack Hobbs and Brian Close (George Gunn's Test career spanned 4 decades but he missed out playing in the 1920s).
He would need to go on playing into his late 40s to equal Wilfred Rhodes' record of playing international cricket in 5 different decades which would be the cricketing equivalent of living in 3 separate centuries. As for cricketers still around who were actually born in the penultimate century before this one there is always Cotar Ramaswami (aet. 16/6/1896) who continues to live in all our hearts if nowhere else.

Paul Robson did a great version of that song
Methuselah was before my time...of course I understand a certain crusty Roman poet has roamed the planet 4 millenia

friends of friends helped organise a visit of the great man to Australia...he gave several impromptu concerts on the wharves and factories - he was of course a red. a remarkable person and talent...he used to change the lyrics of ole man river depending on his level of political optimism

his politics were not well received by the repressive governments of the time and his career suffered as a result ... Nat King Cole followed later in his footsteps, unlikely as that may seem

Except I don't think Nat expressed any admiration for the repressive governments of the Soviet Union and East Germany or accepted awards from them.
Meanwhile proof that we're still in touch with the 19th century. This man was born in the year of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee when 'Monkey' Hornby's Lancashire won their first Championship title with Briggs, Cuttell, Hallam and Mold taking 420 wickets between them. Not that he would know or care, of course:
