I missed mentioning the passing of Eddie Leadbeater, a post-war English leg-spinner. He was also a rarity among English test cricketers in that he was never awarded a county cap. You really have to earn a cap up in Yorkshire.
RIP Eddie

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXI / The Death Thread 2011
Saw snippets on the nooz tonight about Michael Douglas. The story revolved around an interview he did very recently on Oprah, where he discussed his wife's, the delightful Catherine Zeta, recent diagnosis of bi-polar disease. The main point coming out of the interview was the rude health of Michael Douglas. He seems to have beaten throat cancer. Erm, good for, cough, him. Barsteward.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXI / The Death Thread 2011
It appears that Durham abolished their capping system in 2005 so Liam Plunkett, and presumably all future Durham players who appear for England, will join Leadbeater as an uncapped Test player.
Is Ronnie Stanyforth the only uncapped player to have captained England? He only ever played 4 matches for Yorkshire in total in the season following his return from South Africa in 1927-8 where he stood in for Guy Jackson, thus creating a record of playing for England without having played for a county at all (Stanyforth mainly played for the Army and MCC sides).
I suppose the greatest of England's uncapped players must be S.F.Barnes who preferred playing for his native county of Staffordshire in the Minor Counties' Championship, despite playing occasionally for Lancashire and Warwickshire (which named a stand after him at Edgbaston)

Rugby players have been capped for the British (&Irish Lions) before playing for their country.

Sammy Woods managed to play 3 tests for Australia despite never playing for an Australian State team or even playing a first class match in Australia. Not bad for a bloke who played 401 FC games. Of course he also represented England in another three tests.

Speak for yourself, Skulls, just because Mick Douglas has cheated the Grim Reaper yet again. You would have been better off with his missis undergoing complications from her lobotomy. One barbecued Test cricketer (sadly), Mubarak (a late entry) undergoing cardiac arrest and ZZ G only one foot away from the grave (as that's the only one she's got) leave me still feeling quietly confident. Was hopeful that Hamas or Hezbollah might get to JB on his recent trip to Israel but no such luck - there's never a suicide bomber around when you want one. Still there may be a crazed music lover lying in wait somewhere.

Thanks, Skulls, but as an alumnus of my college once warned:
I think you know the rest. Perhaps that should be the motto of this thread.
Never send to know for whom the bell tolls...

This poor sap kicks off at 22 with a world of potential in front of him while our nominees continue to thieve oxygen.
"ARCATA — It is with great sadness that the Humboldt Crabs announce the passing of Scott Heinig, a Crabs pitcher in 2009 and 2010. He was 22 years old.
Heinig, who was named the Crabs’ co-Pitcher of the Year in 2009, was at a gathering at a friend’s home in Davis on Saturday evening, April 23, when he apparently fell, according to police reports.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to a brain aneurysm just after noon on Sunday."
