But it will be a sad day indeed when we have no curiosity, drive, or ambition to break new ground. It sounds a bit geeky, but sooner or later the human race will need to find places to live beyond Earth if they want to survive as a species.
The money would be better spent ensuring that this planet survives.
But Earth only has finite natural resources. What happens when all the oil has been drained, and all the rock and metal mined? And the population continues to grow. Of course there's also the distinct possibility of a huge meteorite hitting the Earth as well, and I hear that the powerful radar in Australia that monitors the entire southern hemisphere for large meteorites has just had its funding cut. In the southern hemisphere it's now up to amateurs with telescopes to monitor the skies. Sooner or later this planet will reach a tipping point. And then what?

Didn't you watch the doco, Trev?? The same mineral rich meteors that smashed the Earth have also been smashing the moon for billions of years. All the minerals we ever need are there, just 385,000 kms away.

I'm no expert, but doesn't the moon have something to do with Earth's gravity? Digging it up might have interesting consequences.

Aparently Virgin Galactic ignored numerous warnings from experts that their rocket was unsafe. This might not end well for the project or indeed for Virgin, which is a shame as I'm a Richard Branson fan.
Honestly, I think the United States is a bit behind the game as far as space is concerned these days. China and India seem to be at the forefront now, so any company or billionaire who wants to invest in space travel and space living, should probably go through one of those two countries.
