Died today at his home in Adelaide. Had a heart attack last year and apparently never fully recovered. I thought he was a pretty good and insightful commentator as well as being regarded as probably the best spin bowling coach in the World. RIP.

Sad news although he probably lasted longer than he thought he was going to do a decade or two ago.

BTW - I think that makes TJ the 3rd Australian cricketer who played since the start of the 70s to have passed away.

Not a bad record really given how hard some of those guys went at it.

Was still doing spin-clinics in England up to last year - which is when he had his heart attack.

Sounds like he a pretty rough final year.

TJ had a very checkered life. Not the greatest spin bowler but certainly not the worst. Had a big influence on Warney which is probably his greatest contribution to the game.

Back when he was playing, I always hoped that he would make the test team ahead of KOK but the selectors kept picking the overrated spiv & TJ only got 9 tests. You can be sure his captain would have preferred Jenner. I guess one of the great memories of him was his spin bowling partnership with Ashley Mallett. They would definitely be the most potent spinning partnership in Australian domestic cricket during my time as a spectator & probably one of the best all-time.

RIP TJ

TJ copped his lot in life (self and otherwise inflicted) with no complaint, humour and grace..

all power to his memory because of that

I was at a Carbine Club lunch in Perth that TJ was the guest speaker...Very funny stories about himself and coaching Warnie ...very honest about his time in prison

After the lunch had ended they set up a tv in the bar and were playing highlights of TJs career ...with TJ giving wonderful self deprecating commentary on ....including getting sconed by Snow ...which TJ put down to his own fault for being 'scared sh!tless'

After the lunch I ventured out into Perth ...met up with Zimmy and Lardy ...and allegedly tried to assassinate Mr Bucket

Great Times

that sounds about right, horrie. RIP TJ.

I liked a story I read within the past few days where TJ, when engaged in a game post-FC career and post incarceration had to score as well as play ... his team won by the proverbial 2 or 3 runs and he was challenged on account of the exploits that had led to his incarceration. Things were becoming a little heated until TJ said 'mate, I could always add it up, I just didn't bank it', or words to that effect.

Anyway ... who WERE the spinners keeping TJ and Rowdy out of the WA team in the early to mid 60's? Long forgotten now ...
