GSC looked the better player, but I would have chosen Ian to play for my life.

agreed....Ian had far less ability but was possibily one of the most competitive people to have played the game

I wasn't born when they were playing, but Ian Chappell better than Greg? You're having a laugh.
Greg made his fair share of tough runs. Just because he made batting look easier than Ian, it doesn't mean he wasn't trying and only made runs when the going was good.

Greg was undoubtedly a far better batsman than Ian and we were not suggesting he was not tough or not trying

Ponting in full pomp was awesome but I'd go with GSC for overall class and consistency.

Re: Punter or Chappellg as second Aussie to Bradman
There has always been a perception that Chappelli scored tougher runs and he was obviously very tough but there were quite a few occasions when the team was set a tough task and Ian went early and Greg steered the ship. It's probably one of the those perceptions which will always remain.
When I was scoring for Melbourne Cricket Club, Stacky was captain-coach for a season or two and he told me that Greg was the more talented player but he also rated Ian more highly. You do get players contemporaneous to them who'll say similar things.
Then Lawson said Chappellg was the most talented batsman he ever played with, and perhaps bowled to but he hated him as a captain because he couldn't empathise with his teammates whereas Ian was a man's man. Sometimes how players rate the person can cloud their judgements about them as players.

Aloof and detached was/is a very common criticism of GSC as a skipper.
