Right now as we speak Philander would readily fit into that era of the Windies pace attack. The Windies 4th quickie wasn't always the sharpest, it's only when they had Ambrose, Walsh (I named my son after him), Holding and Marshall that they had a true and genuine quartet of pure pace. Kenny Benjamin, Anthony Cummins and a few others weren't express pace.

From an idiot on the SA board. He is talking about the Windies 70/80 attack for what it's worth.

What a dribbling idiot. Roberts? Croft? Clarke? Garner, FFS?

And you'd have to be an idiot to name your son Walsh. Or even worse ... Courtney. It might be OK in the Windies, when legends and near-legends are routinely called Cuthbert, Curtley, Everton, Anderson, Jeffrey, Vasbert, Elquemedo, Thaddeus, Chester, Clive, Floyd, and Hilary, etc ... but away from the billowing ganga, these names are just a bit weird.

He's more Corey Collymore than Malcolm Marshall.

But to be fair he's better than Collymore.

He was probably trying to say something along the lines of "his lack of pace isn't a problem, he gives variety to the attack and takes wickets regardless of his speed deficiency."
Terrible way of writing it though!

Collymore wasn't a bad bowler.

It's harder to be a top bowler if there's very little around you. See Darren Gough. See Fred, for a year or two. Steyn too takes on an extra dimension of danger if Morkel is properly firing. (Philander has been a surprise hit.)

It's the wolf pack mentality, and the competitive edge too. Or to put it the other way, it's obviously tough esp for a pace bowler if you start to feel you're having to go through a team more or less on your own.

I'd say of the ones you mentioned, Steyn needs no-one to help him out at the other end.

I do wonder what Collymore would've been like with more support.

Good bowler, but still nowhere near that good.

Did Ambrose, Walsh, Holding and Marshall even play together in the same match? Yes I know the OP is over three years old and yes I know I could look this up for myself.

Even if they did Mikey was probably only fast medium by that point.

No. Mikey's last game was v NZ in Wellington in Feb 87. Ambrose debuted v Pak at PoS in April 88. Marshall, Ambrose and Walsh played numerous Tests together between 88 and 91.

I just figured the guy had no clue at all.

At one stage Roberts, Holding, Garner and Croft must all have played together, with Marshall in the wings as apprentice, and Sylvester Clarke reduced to scrabbling for Krugerrand.

That was the Boxing Day 1981 attack - hence why Hughes' 100* is in the Wisden Top 10 innings.

Is this guy also going on about the new talent that Kanye West just discovered?
