CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
Seriously.
Quite a few stories about it on the web now.
Apparently James Sutherland will talk to the meejah at lunchtime today about the idea.
Lots to be achieved before it could happen IMO.
Mind you, given how late it stays light in mid summer, they could quite easily play until 8pm in some parts of Aus, and possibly 9pm in England, without too much reliance on artificial lighting anyway.

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
They used orange balls for the Shield Day nighters back in the 90s...seemed to work okay.
All for it myself, will not only add something to the game (the twilight period may well be an interesting time to bowl/bat) but get more people to the game.
A 6:00pm to 8:00pm last session would be 'grouse'.

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
The orange balls left 'comet trails' on TV coverage.
There is a pink ball trial scheduled for county second XI fixtures in England in 2008. Wouldn't surprise me if CA have been running some sort of secret trial and announce same during the presser today.
I wouldn't mind DN Tests, especially as in my current job I am supposed to finish up at around 2pm.

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
I think there was an issue with how much the orange ball swung.
But with the state of pitches/bowling maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Well batsmen seem to rule the game, the minute the ball starts doing a bit they have a sook.

Tawny: "And it looks like the umpires are offering the batsmen the light!"
Bill: "What the fark are your talking about? The lights have been turned on for the last hour?"
Tawny: "Well there not the only ones turned on by these Lanka uniforms..."
Bill: "Oh fark, here we go..."

Scientists will also test the pink balls for television: orange ones used before left a trail in the dark

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
Surely the biggest issue with all this is 9, if they won't interrupt the news to show the end of the cricket what are the odds they will shelve their entire prime time schedule to show the test?

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
Given that cricket's on during summer, that's not an issue pdy. Summer in Aus = even crappier TV than ususal.
That's one of the reasons WSC was started up by Nein in 77.
And I reckon CricAus would fairly swiftly make the break at the end of the first session short annd the 'evening' break the 40 minute break, at say 6pm until 640. Just the time for a news bulletin...

Nein delayed ACA until 11:00pm to show the rubbish game live here in Perth...
But the ODI on Friday is on a two hour delay...

not a bad idea to give it a trial...not much point doing it in the west tho given the time delay for us eozzies...would work well in easy coast capitals

Re: CricAus considering Day/Night Tests
The ball has always been the issue. This would have happened 20+ years ago if that was sorted.
They played D/N Super Tests in the second year of WSC but that was with white balls & we know the difficulties there.
Like you guys I'm a bit excited about what CA might have to say today - big balls breakthrough?

Ever been to the Todd River in Alice Zat? The sad cases you find there are often the scum that their own people have rejected.
