Australia Day hand-wringing
I have to work today so decided to get into the spirit by wearing an Australia Flag bucket hat (purchased years ago at the Australian Open - not that cheap stuff the Sunday Terrorgraph was flogging last week).
Anyway, I walk into the ABC and cause heads to explode.
While it was all good natured, within 10 minutes I had about 10 people make jokes referencing "racists", "bogans", "southern cross tattoos", "the Shire", "being scared", "Invasion Day" etc.
I knew I'd get a rise out of them but that's not why I wore the hat. I just love my country, am grateful for everything it has given me and always like to get into the spirit of a celebration.
Happy Australia Day everybody!

Admittedly it is difficult to take me seriously today. The hat is particularly daggy and garish

We've brought a bit of hogan to Mosman today. MrsK has just draped a large Aust flag on our front porch.

Enjoy the day there trike.
Thanks for the well wishes from the poms.
A saffer mate of mine becomes an aussie today. That's a reason to celebrate.

I was at the OZ day ceremony at Bellerive today. Witnessed my neighbour Brian Ritchie (ex Violent Femmes bassist) & his wife become Aussies as well as twenty odd other citizens. It was a very pleasent day.

It all happened on the boardwalk where we had dinner at the NZ test.
Re: Australia Day hand-wringing
I would have made a joke about your hat too. But only because the flag bucket hat is one of the most stupid items of clothing gong around, and is never a good look.Hass wrote:I have to work today so decided to get into the spirit by wearing an Australia Flag bucket hat (purchased years ago at the Australian Open - not that cheap stuff the Sunday Terrorgraph was flogging last week).

Btw Hass, please tell me you didn't go for the latest Aus Day accessories that were incredibly popular in some parts of town here...
http://www.mirrorsocks.com.au/
And there was I thinking a mirror sock may have been some sort of deice used by RD types to prevent accidentally seeing oneself in a mirror when using a sock for a part of the body other than the foot...

That's the point. The hat is supposed to be daggy.
Obviously jokes come with the territory, but they were heavily slanted towards people making fun of the supposedly "racist" overtones and less about the dagginess of the hat in general.
P.S. You can rest assured that I have not bought any mirror socks!

Re: Australia Day hand-wringing
You could have pointed out that the people calling you racist had obviously not read the 'survey' and were reeling on Nine news for their 'knowledge'. I know how well that would go down at the ABC!

I'd forgotten about that. I must be getting old.
