The big girl is gonna spill
Warragamba to spill
"Warragamba Dam, to Sydney's west, is set to spill for the first time in 14 years with heavy rain predicted across south-eastern NSW."
"The Sydney Catchment Authority said Warragamba Dam was 88 per cent full, and would spill if 80mm of rain fell over the entire 9000 square kilometre catchment area."
-----------------------------------
Apparently the Knee of Syd is gonna cop 100+ mm over the next 3 days.
The big Dam holds 4 times the volume of Sydney Harbour, but got as low as 37% in early 2007. A decision to build Sydney's Desalination plant was made in 2006. Ironically, water levels have steadily risen since Jan 2007.

Re: The big girl is gonna spill
So it looks like the decision to build the desal plant has lead directly to the rain falling on the dams.
A bit like when the 1983 drought broke just after Hawkey was elected.
Pinkos - saving the country in all sorts of ways.

Jayzuuuuus, the weather dudes are now saying up to 300mm of rain is possible between now and the weekend in and around Sydney.
It's been my type of summer, with the average temp in December-January just 22C.

So, what's the strategy for controlling outflow from the dam so that Penrith, St Mary's, Rooty Hill, Blacktown and Mt Druitt aren't destroyed?
Actually, scrap that.

Well not really. I used to work up in the Lower Mountains and would drive past a billboard everyday that had the 1961 flood level on it. It was about 10 feet over my head and was in the middle of the suburb of Richmond.

Yup, I have seen that sign in Windsor too. Scarey shit when you consider it is the middle of a dense residential precinct.lardbucket wrote:I remember something similar out at Windsor

What's scarier is that the displaced hordes of Rooty Hill etc might be relocated to Hornsby.

Dam spills are farking scary. A few years ago, my brother had to wade through upto chest high water for a day after a large dam overflowed in Tamil Nadu.

A mate is shitting himself at Pitt Town. The Hawkesbury is up and Warragamba hasn't let go yet (although they did exercise the flood gates for a small spill today).
