Just what the doctor ordered!
JOHN Winston Howard is a name richly steeped in Australia's political narrative.
He's a long-serving member of the Liberal Party, and more importantly, the country's prime minister for 11 years.
The ex-politician has since become a published author and received an Order of Merit from the Queen in January.
Now he adds another accolade to his long record of achievement, and it's just what the doctor ordered.
John Howard - the ex-prime minister and not the actor - is now Dr John Howard.
He has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Macquarie University.
The college's vice-chancellor professor Steven Schwartz says Mr Howard is an icon of Australian politics
"Whether you agree or disagree with his politics, it is difficult not to agree that John Howard served his country with unflagging commitment," he said.
"He truly showed the value of persistence in achieving his goals."
He may have lost his seat to Maxine McKew at the 2007 election, but at least he can rock up to parties in full robe and formal bonnet and say: "that's Dr Howard to you, son," to unsuspecting young guests.

Re: Just what the doctor ordered!
He joins a worthy list...

From the article:
One thing that irks people with a real PhD is when honorary recipients call themselves “doctor”. This is generally discouraged, but there are notable examples of people who have embraced the use of the title.
Former governor general Peter Hollingworth was controversially very fond of calling himself Dr Hollingworth.
Of course, Hollingworth was a disaster as GG and was appointed by none other than John Winston Howard.

Re: Just what the doctor ordered!
Of course, to be fair to Howard, he isn't the least deserving person to get one...
