Yeah I've seen the Mormon one, Skulls. Scary that a Mormon has a decent chance at being the next president.

The creation story of Scientology isn't so much more ridiculous than any of the others.
I disagree that religious people aren't harmless though. They are holding us back with their bronze age views on science. Their wilful instruction of their children to ignore logic and reason and believe the same fantasies they do is also completely unacceptable.

Not sure who you are disagreeing with because I didn't really say that. I said that most were harmless, as in your average Christian/Muslim/Jewish person who you meet in the street. I don't think that most religious people are forcing their nonsense to be taught in classrooms, that tends to be people with an agenda and not your day to day person of faith. Of course religion as a whole and the people you cite are dangerous and as you say, are holding us back. My point was that not every religious person was a nutjob and I don't think the same can be said for Scientology.Klämmssøn wrote:The creation story of Scientology isn't so much more ridiculous than any of the others.

Yeah, I did mean to say that. But if I edit it now, it will ruin your edit.
I don't think any religious person is harmless. We don't need people who blindly follow and question nothing. Dangerous.
I think you have to be somewhat of a nutjob to believe.

Depends how you define religious.

Not all religious people are like that though. I think there is a big grey area between bonafide atheists and fundamentalists that you aren't acknowledging here.Klämmssøn wrote:vilkrang wrote:Not sure who you are disagreeing with because I didn't really say that. I don't really want to have a long drawn out debate here because we are essentially singing from the same hymn sheet (heh), I'm an atheist but I have known and am friends with a few religious folk and I don't consider them to be nutjobs or dangerous. I think a lot of the time religious people just haven't considered an alternative because they've been brought up in a religious household. Say what you want about the outrageous super-natural claims of Christianity but the basic message in a nutshell of "treat others like you would wish to be treated" is a pretty good one and if you've been told from when you are born that Jesus was the son of God and you'll go to heaven after you die, then it's quite conceivable that you could live with not questioning it without it being particularly detrimental to your life. I think you are trying to say "But where does thye non-questioning stop?" and we can only speculate on that but I personally don't think it would stretch to anything dangerous with most people.
I think you have to remember, particularly in this country where getting through the day without dying isn't a daily struggle, that most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about these things and just want to get on with life.
A very good mate of mine was brought up as a Christian and I remember hearing him mention something religion related to his sister on the phone. I'd known him for only a year at this point and I asked him if he was a Christian and he said something like "Erm, yeah, I mean I was christened and believe in god so yeah I'm a Christian". I started questioning all his beliefs and it was quite clear that he hadn't really given it much thought. He's an agnostic now but it took him 20 odd years to have someone question his religion but I think it goes to show that not everyone thinks about these things a lot and if they identify themselves as a Christian or a Jew then it doesn't necessarily make them a nutjob or dangerous.

Don't know why Scientologists are particularly singled out as being sinister weirdos - have a look at the rest.
scientologists deny mental illness exists and argue it is a conspiracy of medicos. I remember them trying to recruit people with psychotic illness as they entered and left an inner urban mental health clinic in chip central...
scientologists are the lowest of the low...a ponzi scheme of beliefs

As far as I'm aware they've not got a history of killing heretics, though.

Can I pay to NOT be a Scientologistapologist???
Re: Well, I''ve been crying my eyes out all night.....
You mean a Scientpologist?
You can, but it's not cheap. Also, you're still not allowed to be gay.

Looks like a juicy and ugly divorce soap opera about to unfold.
"KATIE Holmes's divorce from Tom Cruise is starting to sound like a Mission: Impossible plot.
According to celebrity website TMZ, Holmes is convinced private detectives hired by Cruise's Church of Scientology are watching her every move."
...
"Holmes has brought in celebrity divorce lawyers as she maps out her split from the Hollywood heartthrob.
The actress has reportedly been planning her flight from Cruise's coop, securing a Manhattan apartment for her and their daughter Suri.
Holmes has retained New York lawyer Allan Mayefsky to guide her through the break-up. He specialises in costly divorces, including that of model Christie Brinkley."
----------------------------------------------------
One imagines there won't be too much Science going into this battle. The Church stalking her, FFS. Methinks Rupert was being gentle with his "creepy, even evil" barb.

Won't come to anything. She'll get everything she asks for in exchange for silence. The last thing Tommy boy wants is to have to go to court and divulge any information about their "relationship".
Re: Well, I''ve been crying my eyes out all night.....
Yeah, prolly. "Cruise is a flaming mincing loony" will hardly do his career any good. Oh wait...

Almost as weird as Cruise is Oprah and the crowd encouraging him. It's such bizarre footage all round.
"Something's happened to you!"
Shut it.

For closure, he should go back on Oprah and just sort of glumly shuffle on the sofa a bit.
Re: Well, I''ve been crying my eyes out all night.....
A consoling hug from Oprah should be a nice prologue.
