Dodgy $50 notes showing up in Launceston

Counterfeit $50 notes with hand-painted stars are being used in Launceston, with police getting 20 separate reports of the dodgy cash being handed over within the past two weeks.

The notes bear the same serial number - HH 13863456 - and are a good likeness for a real $50 note but are slightly smaller and a different weight.

"The most identifying feature of the $50 note that the public should look out for is that the white stars in the clear window are of poor quality and appear to have been hand painted," Tasmanian Police said in a release on Thursday.
