Shocking and tragic state of affairs. RIP.

He escorted Police to a shallow grave north of Melbourne.

It's hard to believe that the guy hasn't done something like this before. And if he hasn't, you wonder what, at the age of 41, drove him to do it now? And how many people out there are like him who might randomly have a switched flicked that turns them from a member of society to a murdering monster.

Even before they nabbed him there were women who have come forward and described someone like him as the man who tried to attack them and there have been some random rapes and violence against female tourists, some matching his description.
A few people rang up the ABC this morning and described him like the above and political correctness kicked in, i.e. his rights etc.
Interestingly Jill had done martial arts training but that didn't save her.

Not surprising if she was pissed.

That was the sad thing; may have impaired her judgement. She refused an offer from a male colleague to be escorted home. While she didn't live far away, inebriated and walking on towering heels wouldn't have been a great combination. It's a pity that the apparently not insignificant number of complaints by women in that area of random assaults etc. hadn't been made public. At that hour of the morning it was going to be dodgy.

To be fair, once charges are laid the ABC (and any media organisation) has a responsibility not to commit subjudice. I would be surprised of Bayley has anyone sympathetic to him within the ABC.

I don't think people are saying this, everyone should have a right to walk the streets with impunity. Nonetheless as mentioned, if she had been aware of the reported nastiness in the area she may have been more inclined to accept the offer of an escort. It's not easy to walk around in towering heels.

From Pickering ....
"Your past history involves sexual violence and you have been jailed for other serious matters.” A Geelong Magistrate said earlier this year. Bayleyhad been on parole until March 17, 2013. He was convicted and sentenced to three months’ jail for assault. He was also excluded from entering Geelong's CBD for 12 months.
A report in the Geelong Advertiser says a 40-year-old thug, still on parole, claimed he was too drunk to remember king-hitting a Geelong man, breaking his jaw and rendering him unconcious, a court heard.
Adrian Bayley, had pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates' Court to a single charge of recklessly causing serious injury.
Police Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable David Vanderpol said that, about 1.24am on August 12, last year, the 20-year-old victim was standing outside a cafe in Little Malop St having something to eat when Bayley approached.
"Bayley started yelling and abusing the victim, then punched him with a closed fist to the face," Sen-Constable Vanderpol said.
"The power of the blow lifted the victim off the ground and knocked him unconcious to the ground, striking his head as he fell."
The prosecutor said Bayley then ran off and the victim was taken to Geelong Hospital with a fractured jaw.
Sen-Constable Vanderpol said the entire incident was captured on CCTV footage and there was also footage which showed Bayley earlier at the Eureka Hotel.
He said police later arrested Bayley who claimed he was too drunk to remember but recalled being involved in some sort of altercation.
Michael Brugman, for Bayley, said his client was, “distraught that he had harmed someone else”.
"He has been losing sleep wondering how or why and trying to remember," Mr Brugman said.
The lawyer said his client had spent most of his life in jail and was currently on parole until March 17, 2013.
"He is due to start a new job today and has no priors for violence," Mr Brugman said.
But Magistrate Ron Saines rejected Mr Brugman's claim that his client had no priors for violence.
"I have no alternative but to order an immediate custodial sentence," Mr Saines told Bayley.
"Your past history involves sexual violence and you have been jailed for other serious matters."
Bayley was convicted and sentenced to three months jail.
He was also excluded from entering Geelong's CBD for 12 months.

Having read a lot of true crime I am constantly amazed by how many eventually convicted of serious crimes, including murder have a string of offences the length of someone's arm yet keep getting a slap on the wrist. I know it sounds like you're a red neck if you call for longer sentences but that's the reality so many have been treated leniently or they have claimed some sort of syndrome in mitigation. The sad thing though is that victims like Jill Meagher are the ones who receive life sentences.

I'm confused MB. Was he sentenced to gaol for the assault or not?

Sounds like that until Bayley is locked up for life (which he now will be) there was always going to be at least one more victim. It may not have been Meagher but it would have been someone. Meagher's death and his quick apprehension has probably saved others from him. It also highlights the need for near miss victims to speak out.

Got it.
As I said later, it would have just meant that the person to die wouldn't have been Meagher but someone else.

Won't be easy selecting a disinterested jury for this case.

I reckon there is a good chance the trial will have to be moved interstate.
Unless of course he just pleads guilty.

Hopefully they let him exercise with Matthew Johnson

Seeing as Victor Chang's murderer just got parole after only 20 years in prison, a lengthy sentence is by no means guaranteed here.

Yeah but Bayley is obviously mentally not all there and is almost certainly going to be a risk to the public while he is not in gaol.
Chang's murderer was just the paid henchman and he's being deported back to Malaysia.

Although to be fair, his parole is being appealed and it wouldn't be surprising if the appeal is upheld.
