Former cricket umpire Darrell Hair, has been fined and placed on a good behaviour bond for stealing nine thousand dollars from a bottle shop in Orange where we was working. Apparently he has a serious gambling addiction and has been suffering depression.

This is certainly a fall from grace for someone who was in the spotlight, perhaps notoriously so for that Boxing Day when he called Murali for chucking.

A sad fall from grace for an umpire willing to act on what we all knew.

Rubbish. CBER should have been called earlier in his career. The treatment of Hair by the ICC was outrageous & lead to a new generation of cheats. The fact that a number of umpires came out & admitted that they wanted to call Murali but were afraid of the consequences shows how little faith they had in the ICC. I have no doubt Hair's current situation is an indirect result of the vilification he received for 'doing his job'.

Mikey Holding's greatest negative legacy. The irony is that Chuck still wasn't legal under Mikey's committee's revised 15 degree definition of chucking.

If this is under 15 degrees, I'm John Holmes...

Wow, it's like a gag reflex here. Fact is the Murali was tested and cleared and no, the law wasn't changed for him.

Law was changed when ICC mandated tests discovered many bowlers including McGrath were straightening their elbow. ICC then came up with an arbitrary straightening angle of 15 degrees which cleared Murali and Mcgrath both.

If ICC had come up with another arbitrary straightening angle of elbow, let us say, 10 degrees, then Mcgrath would just have made the cut but Murali would have been deemed illegal. And if they had been even more conservative with the straightening angle, let's say 5 percent, then a vast majority of bowlers would have their actions deemed illegal.

Perhaps the majority of Australian and English public would have wanted the straightening angle fixed where their bowlers get a free pass but not Murali who visually looked suspect because of hyperextension?

I cannot believe this is still being discussed now. Murali was clean as. The greatest bowler to have played the game.

That picture is meaningless and proves nothing. The rules do not prohibit bent in the arm but the straightening of it. Murali's straightened his arms with the permissible limit of 15 percent. The squillion tests he underwent stand testimony to that.

The fact that photo shows him in front of a black screen suggests it was taken during testing, which suggests that he was arrogant enough by that stage to not even bother covering it up.

Perhaps he was arrogant (I'd say he was confident) but what prevented the biomechanic experts at Australian testing venue to call him out for it?
