How did Chris Old get in there? - he was a fine player (when all of him turned up at the ground at the same time), but not an all-time great.

Was it Chris Old who once injured himself by sneezing?

Sneezing? ROFL

Was it one of those sneezes he kept in and hence ruptured a nostril or something?

Quite possibly. He had it all: line, length, swing and seam. Another in the line of potentially great English bowlers whose careers were blighted by injury.

Not the world's worst number 8 or 9 either. He put on 80 odd with Botham in THAT test.

I suppose that's quite possible if you have niggles in your back.
He owns a restaurant down here.

The same section shows that England appear to have the monopoly on bizarre cricketing injuries - Derek Pringle put his back out 'writing a letter' though he denies this and claims he was merely 'leaning back on a chair' - oh that's alright then! Tony Greig ricked his neck while shaving. Phil Edmonds missed a Test because he injured himself getting out of his car, but at least he didn't do a Ted Dexter and get run over - by his own car! Apparently it had broken down and he was pushing it then disaster struck.

If he could have melted Lehmann down, he'd have enough lard to keep him going for the next ten years.

I was down there the other week - but unfortunately it was closed. Chris had unfortunately ruptured his wrist flicking a haddock over...

Just watched the clip -

Greham 'Zap' Gooch and David 'Lu' Gower indeed?

Didn't Larwood and Tyson use to run in slowly as well? I'm surprised they got any pace at all bowling like that.

Brian Close, Geoffrey Boycott, Fred Trueman, Raymond Illingworth.

Perm any two from four and that shower of sh*te currently langushing at fifth in the ICC rankings would be a well deserved second... at the very least!

'Truemans Tales', £14.99. Available from good book shops everywhere and some rubbish ones as well.

Aargh, a no win, statistics loaded question.

Bas, given the opposition Close was a far better batsman than Ian Bell. The fact BC was picked by England to front up an uber hostile Windies attack when in he was in his 40s cos all southern batsmen at the time sat down to p*ss speaks volumes about the man.

It speaks volumes about the "quality" of the batting ability of the other players available for selection - that a player in his 40s had to be considered in the first place, who - courtesy of the Byzantine politics of Yorkshire cricket found himself plying his trade for a "poofy" southern county.

Of course, there was one certain batsman who was most definitely better than Close, but decided not to make himself available to play wasn't there?

Now that's harsh Bas,

As you and I both know Chris Old was unavailable for that Test as he had severely chapped lips...
