It has to be VVS.

Given the eveness of the averages I think you have to look at their contributions in terms of winning Test matches for their teams. Too lazy to pull up the data.

Lara was the most likely to take the Aussie bowlers apart once set.

Laxman - Stellar contributions in the Kolkata, Chennai, Adelaide and Mumbai wins. Contributions in the Sydney loss and the Sydney draw as well.

Yep, you can't ask for more from a batsman against the best side in world.doremi wrote:Mick Sawyer wrote:Paul Keating wrote:Who in your opinion has been the most successful batsmen against Australia during the past two decades?

I was thinking along that kind of line myself d. Lara & SRT have also played match winning hands but my impression is not as frequently as this bloke

Re: Who is the best batsmen against Australia?
You could make a stronger case for Lara IMO - contributions in the Perth (132), Kingston (213), Bridgetown (153*) and St John's (68 & 60) victories. A couple of telling contributions in draws too - Sydney (277) and St John's (88 & 43).
Probably biased towards Lara as his 153* ranks as the finest innings I have ever seen (in one of the most competitive series too).

I think it's remarkable that SRT has almost identical averages playing against Australia at home and away: 51.87 and 52.66, respectively.

Lara and Laxman are more or less equally good against Australia.

Re: Who is the best batsmen against Australia?
I would go with VVS, narrowly, over Lara. It's my impression that the runs he has made have been in more difficult circumstances more often (Kolkota, the Mumbai potato patch, and in a losing cause in Sydney). I think his innings in Kolkota is the best I have ever seen, under sustained pressure, and in terms of turning a Test match that was gone for all money.

Re: Who is the best batsmen against Australia?
I believe Laxman's record vs AUS, in AUS when McGrath & Warne have been there isn't so hot
I would make it a close thing b/w Lara @ SRT, with SRT maybe taking it, I think he may have have taken on the full force of McGrath & Warne a little better

WTF is Laxman called Latchman? And what's all this 'We We Ess' malarkey?

Lakshman, I've heard. Presumably how it's supposed to be spoken. Sounds oddly affected to our ears ... a bit like 'bath a loner' and similar (to our ear) lithpy Thpanish nameth.
Welease Woger.
