Indias No 1 and 2 batsmen
by batting order are arguably their best two as well. Viru's credentials in terms of attitude, capability and delivery are well documented. But what about Gambhir ! I cannot recall any other player in the last 20 years being so complete as GG at this stage of his career. He clearly comes across as a player who believes that doing the best for the team is primary and the rest will follow. Viru is also in that category. These guys represent the new generation of Indian Cricketers in more than one way. Back to GG, his ability to drop anchor (not sure why MSD wanted that on the 4 day evening, India should have pushed for a win, that is a separate issue anyway). and then being able to crank it up pretty much on will is a great ability to have. Some of his shots, for example when the offside was packed and Broad bowled a foot and a half outside off GG just moved to the pitch of the ball and played it across to mid on were very innovative. He is an extremely fast learner, already has closed out some of his early weaknessess such as the occasional flirts outside off. Looks extremely relaxed always but like Viru can take up the fight anytime to the opposition. Has the game that suits all forms of cricket. Also more importantly he has a physical build that will help with his longevity. One of the more athletic guys don't think he will ever have weight issues and so on.
If he can keep himself motivated and fit he should be around for a long long time and will help the team scale several peaks.

doremi i think
sehwag, tendulkar, gambhir, laxman, dravid - in that order. but GG has peaked at just the right time, taking pressure of dravid at #3 and the middle order. im still not convinced that hes the real deal but fair play to him - he has taken his chances like no other
