Re: Great chokes of all time
I wonder if the engraving ended up reading:
1999 - Jean Van der Velde Qunt
1999 - Paul Lawrie

1981
Lord Botham's 149 not out and Lord Willis's 8 wickets for 43 runs hauled England back from the jaws of defeat against the Aussie chokers. . . . . turning the entire series around.
England went on to win that series.

I agree. We have no idea what you are talking about, Merls. It's like the period between May 1989 and June 2005 for English supporters - it never happened.embee wrote:stop making shit up . merlo

Was cricket played between '89 and '05?!
I must have had a 16 year black out.
Or is that being racist?!!

Re: Great chokes of all time
Mind you, they still haven't made the system fool proof.
"Due to the three-stroke lead Van de Velde had going into the final hole, his name had already been engraved into the Claret Jug. Following his collapse, the engraver had to scratch through Van de Velde's name and then engrave Paul Lawrie's name into it. Beginning with the 2000 Open, the winning golfer's name is no longer engraved into the Claret Jug until after his scorecard is verified by tournament officials and signed by said winning golfer.
The engraver still traces the name on the gold medal as early as possible, which is why photos like this exist:

I remember 06/07. It was the series we played where the pitches weren't doctored.
