I am not sure if I am totally comfortable with switch hitting either. I hate seeing reverse sweeps.
I also thought fieldsmen couldn't move sideways during the bowler's runup although I realise that Smith didn't move until after Doherty had bowled the ball.

Warner in serious doubt for the first test with a strained groin.

I am not sure if I am totally comfortable with its legality.
Danny Morrison read the ICC rule on the commentary & the catch was legit. If anything the reverse sweep should be illegal.

FFS...please don't let Finch be called in as a replacement opener.
Re: Pakistan v Australia, 1xT20 + 3xODIs, UAE, 5-12 October, 2014
Yes. I know the catch was legitimate under the recently revised law but my question was more about whether the law should have been changed.
Wasn't there another similar incident within the last year or two?

Probably, i'm not sure but in my view if the batsman is given an advantage with the reverse sweep then the fielding side should also have a counter.
Re: Pakistan v Australia, 1xT20 + 3xODIs, UAE, 5-12 October, 2014
The reverse sweep should be banned.
Although that might open another can of worms.

This explanation on cricinfo. As has been alluded to above, there has been a revision to this law but it still leaves a grey area.

It's legal. Nothing grey about it. Any fielder doing it is taking a risk in the same way as a fielder coming in 15 yards off the fence is taking a risk ... if the ball is hit or snicked to where he was, he looks like a complete idiot.

It could herald the invention of the reverse reverse sweep....

I remember Michael Vaughan taking a catch in an England warm up game where he "anticipated" the shot and ran around from slip to leg-slip and caught the batsman - only for the umpire to rule it illegal, much to MPV's displeasure as he felt it was "innovative".
I do wonder how it relates to the law allowing only two players behind square leg. I haven't seen the Smith catch yet, but if he moved and essentially became a third player behind square, how can that possibly be legal?

Sounds exactly the same as the Smith catch.Dello wrote:WideWally wrote:Yes. I know the catch was legitimate under the recently revised law but my question was more about whether the law should have been changed.

Interesting. But if it had been a backward point wouldn't we be praising anticipation?

I seem to remember Brendan McCullum taking a similar type of catch as well a couple of years ago.

Indeed, piefellow. Smitty took a punt and was richly rewarded and was within the laws of the day. Had the edge gone straight to where Smith HAD been, he'd be viral on Ewetube for being a complete dill.

Because the fielder ran to where he thought the batman was aiming?

Pakistan A v Australian X1
Hardly worth a mention except for the individual players. Hard to tell who is playing for Aust as Crocinfo has 14 players named. I note Pakistan has some dude called Imran Khan playing. No doubt hoping he will emulate his namesake.
Pakistan currently 84/2 with Mitch & Elmer picking up one each. I see O'Keefe is playing. No wickets but very economical. Sounds like another spinner we know...eh Horrie?
