How far away is James Pattinson from playing for Victoria again?
Also, Pat Cummins needs a solid season of Shield cricket before he gets anywhere near the Aus test side again.

Patto is likely out for the summer (the Test series anyway).

Personally I think you should write them both off.

If you want to win the Ashes, play the kids against India, find out they're crap then go back to the oldies for next (English) summer. Best for us is if you burn out the veterans then have to throw in a load of untried or tried and failed players to come over here.

Re: So, future prospects for Oz test cricket
For the Gabba game v India I'd like to see Lyon 12th at best, a fast deck, and Johnson bowling with Harris and with support from Hilfenhaus, Siddle, and Marsh. I would open with Warner and Rogers, bring Watson back at 3, keep Smith and Clark, and choose an in-form player at 6 regardless of age. this might be Klinger, Voges, Cooper, Bailey, or Ferguson. Rogers is clearly on borrowed time and one more failure would do him in ... but stepping back he has had to bad Tests overseas after a fair period opening successfully it's Warner on wickets to which he is more suited, and he is certainly suited tomEngland wickets (next years Ashes), so I agree about the brownie points. At number 6 I would choose Bailey, who has the experience, will jot be troubled by the Indian bowlers, and who can assist Clarke with the captaincy, as he did when we beat England here.

Doesn't Bailey average something like 25 in first class cricket since 2012? He's just not good enough in the longer form of the game to play test cricket.

How are you playing 4 bowlers, Marsh and a #6? Shirley that is where marsh would bat.

Re: So, future prospects for Oz test cricket
Went to a small lunch today where Ryan Carters was speaking about his "Batting for Change" charity. Had a good chat to him. Very impressive guy.
I told him to score some runs this year if for nothing more than to keep Phil Hughes out of the Test side. He politely said he'd try.

His batting only stepped up when he gave up the gloves so I don't think he/they should risk it.
