Re: Retirement age
I'm hoping retirement is the best job on the planet. I have been putting 20% of my gross income into the building society for 18 years now and have taken no chances with plans and bonds and high risk crap. As of current guesstimates i will retire at 51 and that sounds about bob-on to me. My biological father was down the mines until he was 60 then lasted less than 4 years. Enjoy your very much part-time work Mr. T.

Re: Retirement age
My Mum managed to retire before she was 50 due to a big redundancy package.
In contrast I'll be lucky to retire before I'm 70.

Can you not put some sort of savings plan into place? You're younger than me and time is on your side so to speak.

Living is expensive.

Re: Retirement age
Yeah, I have put a little aside but am also trying to save up for a deposit for a house (which becomes more difficult every passing year, particularly in Manchester where prices are rising faster than I'm earning/saving).whitburn wrote:vilkrang wrote:My Mum managed to retire before she was 50 due to a big redundancy package.

My work accidentally paid me just over a grand and a half extra last month due to what looks like an accounting f*ck up. I'll probably have to pay it back when they realise but for now it's earning a bit of interest in a savings account. If I could rely on them doing it every month I'd be sorted .

This is true but as the old adage goes, 2 ways to be better off, earn more or spend less. Seriously though city living is not cheap i know. I bought my first house at 19 and it proved to be a good move, where as many mates were out drinking 5 nights a week or at the bookies all day if they could get there. I was made redundant at 22 but as soon as i was on good money i started saving a fifth of it. I will be pretty fed up if i have to work past 51. I am ready for the time off already actually. Not happening. But i don't want just 4 years of retirement like my dad got.

Valid. But the best time to start saving was five years ago.
I got lucky. Basically everything paid off.

Re: Retirement age
Well, not quite retirement but I am leaving my job of 17 years next Friday and then head to the UK for 3 weeks of Ashes and EPL.
The terms of my payout mean that I can't work in the industry for at least 6 months so I will probably spend much of the rest of the year getting under Mrs K's feet (she works from home).
Sadly, the payout isn't anywhere near enough to clear the mortgage so I will have to find a reasonable job again at some stage.

I get to Manchester on 10 August. Then in London for the Lords Test plus a couple of days. Then up to Leeds for the Headingley Test.
Where are you going to be?

Bookies pencillor at Randwick, barman at the scg? Be enough to keep you in beer and smokes for a couple of months.

I’ll definitely be at that game (I’ll be taking a day off from the Leeds Test).
Are you thinking of watching any cricket?

Re: Retirement age
I will be at Lords on day 1 and perhaps day 2. I hope my arrival at Lords is more auspicious than my 2015 arrival for day 1 at Trent Bridge, but the Aussies should probably be trembling in their boots at the prospect of JGK and me both being present.

Last time we were both at an Ashes Test rained robbed us of victory (at Manchester). I blame Peter, personally.
