From the evidence of the first game I am worried there is going to be an over abundance of TMO involvement.

Well, I don't know much about rugby but I'd say that's a bit of an upset. Good on Japan.

That was f*cking epic, those last few minutes were incredible viewing, despite an amazing effort I thought they were going to come up short, couldn't believe it when he went over the line.
The mood will not be great in the bars across SA at the moment!

I still can't quite believe that happened.
Teams to have beaten South Africa at the World Cup:
New Zealand
Australia
England
Japan
Struggling to think of a bigger upset in any sport.

If you say you predicted Japan beating South Africa then you are either lying or mental.

Massive shocker for SA. I'd say it was a black day for the Bokke - but given the racial/political intrigue surrounding the side I best not go there.
Not such a massive shocker however - Joubert reffing the Fr V It game is having his usual wank performance. As is the flakester that is Michalak. How France think they can win the RWC with him at 10 is beyond me. He was dodgy when he was at his best - which was back in 2003. Remember how he crumbled against England in the rain. Now he's past it and is still a weak goal kicker when the heat is on. Lopez and Trinh-Duc not even in the squad. Oh France - you are just so...French.

If you made the effort of reading the thread you would understand that I made no such prediction.
The point I was trying to make is that SA is a supremely overrated team that had no hope of winning this WC.

ie youve passed your usual monthly quota of whinging about the quota system
Actually if you followed rugby you would understand quotas are not a big issue in the Bok team at present. One of the main reasons I am not posting a critique is to avoid ignorant remarks such as this.
The racial/political aspects had nothing to do with it.

No need to get so tetchy, I know you didn't make that prediction in the thread, however posting it after the Japan win I thought that was what you were implying.taipan wrote:vilkrang wrote:If you say you predicted Japan beating South Africa then you are either lying or mental.

But of course you didn't predict it. No one would have predicted it.
Still struggling to think of a bigger upset in any sport. Utterly incredible.

Cameroon v Argentina in footie World Cup Italia '90 opening match was quite an upset. But probably not quite on this scale.

Who is tetchy?
I have been watching this coming for 4 years. Clearly not the loss to Japan but this was always going to be the worst Bok team ever to go to the WC.

Not an ideal start for SA. But it's early doors, early doors. The measure of a fine player, of a top team, is not that he/she/it is never beatable, but how it/she/he comes back. Oddly enough, the greatest casualty of this shock may now be Scotland. They will no doubt have thought: okay, we give it what we've got, but let's face it, we're likely to go under against the Boks. But we should be able to nick it against the Japanese. ~ Now suddenly they're facing a herd of wounded rhinos AND a squad of cock-a-hoop rising sons.
Japan were astounding. Madly bold towards the end. Surely just above ANYONE sane would have gone for the kick to achieve a mighty draw, on the second penalty if not the first. The risk of losing control of the ball, possession or committing an infringement once the clock turns red is huge under that pressure. But no ...
That crafty Tassie bastard Eddie Jones. (Didn't realise his mum was Japanese - I assumed Polynesian of some sort, those prolific South Pacific rugby islands.) I thought we'd lost him ages ago. But no. Up he pops again. A blast from the past.

I'd normally post a massive PMSL but with the Safs are still more likely to make the QF than we are.

For sure, nobody would have put their pension pot on SA losing this game.
Taips has said that race, politics and quotas weren't a huge factor, and as a South African, he's in a better position than us to know. On the very first page, he said "for SA team google 2007 squad." Well, nobody can doubt the 'boks are experienced - but 10 of the starting 15 today were aged over 30. Whilst there are a good few cricketers (mainly spinners and batsmen - not fast bowlers) of that vintage, that's not the case in most physical sports. It's generally way too old for modern international rugby - and it showed today. IMO, Japan weren't lucky - that was as poor a SA performance as I can remember.
That said, I don't think Japan will beat either Scotland or Samoa, and both those teams are capable of at least getting bonus points for a narrow loss to SA, if not winning against this squad. I'm minded to punt a fiver on 2 from 3 of Scotland, Samoa & Japan making the quarters now. I'll be surprised if the Springboks don't progress ....... but it's by no means certain after what we saw this afternoon.

Considering the context, that was up there with the 2003 final as the best game of rugby I've ever seen. Obviously not from a technical point of view, but for the sheer heart of the Japanese side.
Japanese rugby actually has a very long and faithful following, right back to the 1920s. Some of the older japanese fans at the ground were crying with delight and disbelief. For sheer passion, emotion and unlikeliness, that really was epic sport, and reminds us of what makes it all so special.

Sage, but I'm happy to laugh at the Yarps given how seriously they take Rugby. I'm happy for the Wobblies to be laughed at.
