Kumble's journey to 600 test wickets
100 - 21 (23) tests
200 - 47 (42) tests
300 - 66 (63) tests
400 - 85 (92) tests
500 - 105 (108) tests
600 - 124 (126) tests
PS: Figures in parenthesis show no. of tests taken by Warne to take multiples of 100 test wickets. Before Aussies lay into me let me clear this. I'm not saying that Kumble is better than Warne, just pointing out some stats that are in favour of Kumble.

Violet is quality, and his 600th wicket was perhaps the most vital of the innings.

Re: Kumble's journey to 600 test wickets
Aye, absolutely no argument. I vividly remember a brilliant battle he was having with Gilly at Chennai in Oct 2004. Gilly gutsily went in at no. 3 and played quite brilliantly. Jumbo bowled 4 consecutive perfectly pitched wrong'uns to Gilly. 2 of them went for 4 and the 4th clipped Gilly's leg stump with him on 49. Weather intervened in what would have been a great Test match. India needed just 200 or so on the last day. Seaweed made a brilliant 150-odd in the 1st innings.doremi wrote:What an absolute LEGEND.

Meh, different sort of bowler. Why does this have to be about the "best"? Jumbo has clearly served his country with distinction and is clearly a legend. Warney was great for Aus, Jumbo continues to be great for India.leg glancer wrote:SG wrote:100 - 21 (23) tests

And I don't think SG was trying to prove that Kumble is better. Just comparing his stats to the greatest exponent of Kumble's craft in the modern, or perhaps, any era.

I wasn't questioning SG's post. It was leg glancer's trolling effort I was targeting.doremi wrote:And I don't think SG was trying to prove that Kumble is better. Just comparing his stats to the greatest exponent of Kumble's craft in the modern, or perhaps, any era.

Yeah, good old Krumble. Quality performer. I still remember Northants versus Yorkshire in the semi-final of some sh!te, Gough was golden boy, just back from the Ashes where he was one of few with credit. Kumble was bowling, that tw@t Boycott was all "Eee, watch out Kumble lad, ee'll like yer bowling." Middle stump line, hit the top of off. F*ck off Goughy, you arse-licked porker.
Re: Kumble's journey to 600 test wickets
So what are the chances Kumble can get a 700? I think he should go for it but he best looks like having not more than year or two? Unless he has the purple year he had in 2004 - 2005 season when he got in 74 wickets that year?
Too bad this milestone didn't come in a year earlier. He couldn't get some in between 1996 - 98 when he seemed to have hit a low. Back then he wasn't clicking in away tests and at home he didn't get as many against Lanka and SA either. Those two years of 96 and 97 probably have pinched his tally some.
Anyways, it is immensely satisfying undoubtedly. He did it without the recognition Warney got and also without being called for throwing. Also it is nice that he has been finally getting plenty of wickets overseas, so thats one monkey off his back.
Think Kumble can hang in there for a year and a half more. 2 more years out of him would be very good for India with some home action lined up.

Hope he takes the record from the little cheating ******. Would be nice for a real bowler to hold the record for most wickets.

If Goughy were a Muslim or "of the faith" would that be construed as a racist remark worthy of a 'report' to Procter?Batfink Begins wrote:Yeah, good old Krumble. Quality performer. Both of them look good enough for a couple of years, so unless MuMu gets handicapped in an accident, I don't see that happening. Now if he were to be retired by Lankan board.....
So how many wickets would Warney have had IF he had played as many tests against Bangals and Zimboks as MuMu did?

Re: Kumble's journey to 600 test wickets
The greatest competitor India has ever produced. I remember him bowling with a broken jaw back in 2002. The beauty of Kumble's bowling is the subtlety. Nothing outrageous, just slight changes of flight, pace, and turn.

Re: Kumble's journey to 600 test wickets
Some of us a while back were suggesting that Gupte should be chosen in an All Time Indian XI ahead of Kumble.
I think that must now be revised. Kumble demands selection. Even if a tie breaker were necessary, his batting would place him first among all Indian wrist spinners.
Does anyone object?

Not me. He has done something not often seen in cricket (Border comes to mind), and not before IIRC in Indian cricket. He has earned greatness the hard way.
