( Rugby Union: ) Lions tour to New Zealand, 2 June - 8 July 2017
We should have a separate thread on this, really. It's not the Six Nations 2016.
If only to commemorate a historic mauling. (Or is that "pecking"?)
Here are the main games - perversely perhaps with UK times.
The warm-up didn't go altogether well. But hey - the jetlag, the referee, the shirt colour a bit disorientating, the food, the light, the conditions underfoot - that sort of thing ...

Could easily be.
We'll see ... partly if Gatland & Co can pull them together, find the best, fastest players - and not least, most cohesively toughest (see Bill McBride's quote) blend.

And this is what I was getting at. The "99!":

Just in case it's not clear (!) - I'm not advocating fists-at-two-paces as the way forward for the Lions in NZ. But the Musketeer ethos ("all-for-one, one-for-all") and collective determination that Lions teams too easily lack. Being multi-national nearly-scratch sides, apart from anything else.

Looking for which, I also found this - much more recent. And another problem with Lions' tours in a squeezed calendar.
Familiar also from international cricket tours, esp for Tests.

Chuckled at two lines in there:
“It is a lot more physical nowadays, verging on violence at times. That is not what the game is about, the skill has been lost from rugby."
But we know what he means. Crunching brawn valued at the expense of nous and deftness.

Yep, I knew all about the 99 call. I went to 3 of the matches on that tour. Of course the 74 Lions also had some of the greatest players of all time. I think about 10 of them are in the World Rugby
Hall of fame. I don't see players of that quality on the present tour.

For the record, the Blues are NZ's weakest franchise

Such setbacks are always two-edged swords.
Wins build confidence.
But losses (as long as narrow) are better to strip any false illusions of confidence, more urgently focus on who's fit and in form, who is shaping up, what is and not working.
One lesson is surely that Farrell now HAS to play, whether at 10 or 12. And again: much as I love him, Jack Nowell's tackling - in NZ? Hmmm.
I still contend that this Lions squad is not as wholly inadequate as some suggest (though I'd wish for a more imaginative head coach, as before). A couple of right old drubbings might alter that view.
On the other hand, I've always thought that All Blacks could even in their leanest years at worst match - when not easily be - the best rugby squad in the world. Even when some pretty much rubbished them. I was 90+% sure they'd win the last WC, for example. They have the passion, focus, all the physical and mental attributes for the sport, and keep turning out stars.
So whatever happens is sure to be tough!

Lions v Crusaders just kicked off. No score so far.

Lions need to win this one to get the tour back on track.

6-3 Lions scrum is getting monstered.

Re: ( Rugby Union: ) Lions tour to New Zealand, 2 June - 8 July 2017
Lions lose again!!!
But, reasons to be (relatively) cheerful.
a) It was touch & go, on another day, Farrell's kick would have gone over, etc.
b) I'm not sure what Gatland&Co are thinking, but the starting selection was just about second or third choice in every position. (Lawes cracked on the head. Pity Launchbury was not chosen for the tour. And while they were at it, Visser. As said above.)
The two biggest worries, I think:
1) I can't see Gatland's strategies for selection or play. (Pity it was not Eddie Jones ...)
2) Penalty infringements, and penalty interpretation. (See 1 - Jones has got England a lot better in playing to even a strange interpretation of infringements by either side. Keep focused and carry on, is part of that. England sides before Jones tended to get rattled by perceived grievances - and proceed to make matters worse.)
Are the Lions doomed to thumping defeats in the Tests? I'm not sure. A lot will depend on whether Gatland& Co learn the right lessons, and do their stuff. And also make the best selections, combinations, gameplans and back-up plans simple enough and congenial enough for those players to "execute".)

And now, back to the cricket
