I was wondering the same thing. I mean she is rich, but not a billionaire like super rich. Maybe her super rich industrialist boyfriend is financing it? [Ness Wadia heads his own Go-Air Airlines and family owned Bombay Dying brand and associated garment industries]

IPL announces franchise owners
Cricinfo staff
January 24, 2008
The configuration of the BCCI-backed Indian Premier League (IPL) became clearer with the announcement of the eight cities and franchisees to be involved in the tournament. Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad were the most expensive teams, each costing over US$100 million.
The list of franchise owners are (all amounts in US$): Vijay Mallya's UB group (Bangalore, 111.6 million), India Cements (Chennai, 91 million), GMR group (Delhi 84 million), Deccan Chronicle (Hyderabad, 107 million), a consortium led by Emerging Media (Jaipur, 67 million), Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment (Kolkata, 75.09 million), Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul and Dabur's Mohit Burman (Mohali, 76 million) and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Limited (Mumbai, 111.9 million).
BCCI vice-president and IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi announced that a total of 11 companies placed eligible bids along with the guarantee deposit.
The three eligible bidders who failed to win ownership rights to a franchise were Deutsche Bank, Anil Ambani's Emerald Telecom Services and construction major DLF. ICICI Ventures, Sahara Hospitality and the Future Group were disqualified from the process as their bids came in late.
The IPL has a pool of at least 78 cricketers with international experience from which the franchises can sign on players. Modi said the date of player auctions, originally slated for February 7, was not yet finalised and would be announced after consultation with the franchisees. With the eight cities finalised, the exact schedule of the IPL matches will also be released in a few days.
He announced that the IPL will launch a multi-million dollar marketing campaign for promoting the event, with US$15 million coming from the media deal with the Sony Entertainment Television-World Sports Group combine and the IPL chipping in with a further five to ten million dollars.
The four cities, out of the 12 earmarked by the BCCI as potential IPL franchise bases, which have missed out are Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Gwalior and Kanpur.
The IPL is an ICC-sanctioned Twenty20 league involving eight franchises and its inaugural season will consist of 59 games and is scheduled to start in April 2008. Each franchise will play the others on a home-and-away basis, with the top four sides going through to the semi-finals.

SRK is definately super rich. Has his own film production company and set to roll out inhouse projects worth 500 crores, with money coming in from Hollywood tie-ups as well. But I am surprised he got Kolkotta. He was aiming for Delhi, his home town. BCCI really found the pot without searching for the rainbow's end. I mean the tournament has not even started. Can these buggers get in so much advertising revenue to afford this and in that case, is a local T20 tourney worth so much fan and media interest?

Who was going to bid over them?
So that's a football team, a F1 team and a T20 domestic team for Mallya. Got to hand it to him, isn't too shy to splurge.

59 games?
Fark!
How are people supposed to see many Tests, ODIs and now T20s in one year? Is BCCI planning to have 24x365 non-stop cricket? So how are Sachin and Dhoni going to play all of it in one calender year?
This whole thing is looking ridiculous at the moment.

So will the BCCI whinge about SRK promoting his films in India matches at the match venues, from now onwards?

Apparently Mallya bid for Mumbai as well, but was outbid by Ambani by $.3 million.

Would love it, if it went the ICL way, a damp squib. This just opens up a Pandora's box of squeezing in more silly ODI games with teams sold to corporate houses as well, and cricket will gain nothing from it.
Now why didn't these people come forward to sponsor players after the last World Cup in West Indies?

Don't think it'll go the ICL way, it's got glamour, T20 viewer friendliness and a few decent players.

Re: BCCI sells Indian Premier League T20 teams to high bidders.
And this bit of comedy from the BCCI - 'compensating' Ganguly and Dravid for being dropped from the ODI side -
Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid may have been axed from the One-day team for Australia, but there is some good news for them as well as Sachin Tendulkar.
According to local media reports, in the inaugural Indian Premier League which starts from April 18, the BCCI has decided to pay them and some other senior cricketers 10-15 percent more money than the highest auctioned player of the Twenty20 event.
The BCCI has shortlisted five cricketers - Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh - who will be called "icon players" and will be the highest paid players in the league. They will not be auctioned if they have a city team.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA. So Ganguly is not good enough for ODIs, a 'youngsters' game, but he is good enough for playing a T20 series which is more demanding, more for young legs and more fast paced than a ODI match.

Seriously, can you visualise Kolkata's team without Ganguly and Mumbai's without Sachin? There's a reason why they won't be auctioned. Though I can't understand why Dhoni's in there, I mean I doubt Ranchi will have a team sometime soon.

Re: BCCI sells Indian Premier League T20 teams to high bidders.
OFF TOPIC, but Indian judiciary has botched up again. How predictable it has become, a complete farce -
Fardeen Khan was acquitted from the charge of procuring 9 gm of cocaine, which would have got a stringent punishment. Additional Sessions Judge P N Deshmukh charged the actor for attempting to buy 1 gm of the drug five years ago, which attracts a lesser penalty.
Khan was caught in Mumbai by the police while attempting to buy cocaine from a drug peddler -- from whom 9 gms of the drug was seized -- in 2002.
During the trial, the actor told the court that he was attempting to buy only 1 gm of the drug and hence should not be charged for a bigger quantity.
No conviction, No rehab, No social service, just a mere reprimand?
What a joke. In USA, a Hollywood star would have had to make up for the offence in much more ways.

aha .. now there is going to be a 'industry' in high class corporate 'escorts', security (dhimmis will give to Eng/SA/Aus contractors), hospitality organized around this circus so that 'esteemed guests' can feel comfortable.
Re: BCCI sells Indian Premier League T20 teams to high bidders.
most of the money is expected from corporate passes, boxes and the like anyways
as for fardeen, cant blame the court if the police have no case. they botched it up right there
