Sri Lanka v New Zealand, 1st Test, Galle, 14-18 August, 2019
There's a few ODI and T20 tournaments on atm (SL v BD, WI v Ind), but nobody gives a rats, so this is the next meaningful stuff coming up.

Do the Snoozers have a shot at the number 1 ranking?

You'd hope so. I expect there will be an obscure rule invoked to deny natural justice.

If NZ beat SL 1-0 and the Bannies draw the series with WI, or NZ win 2-0 and India do no better than 1-0, then NZ go top. If Bannies win 2-0 they stay top.
India have the next 2 series at home v SAf and BD, so even if they don't go top v WI they will be no. 1 again soon enough.

So if the Bannies concede fewer or more leg byes they will remain Number 1.
Is there a Cup involved?

I would imagine NZ have never been Test number one, even on retrospective calcs, so would be a big moment for them even if it wouldn’t last for long.
Which teams have topped the Test rankings (either officially or through historical reconstruction)? Obviously Eng, Aus, WI, SA, Ind - anyone else?

Pakistan were briefly no. 1 in 1988 and again in the latter half of 2016.

A bit of plethora of Test cricket coming in August with this one and the Lords Test together, then 2 Tests WI v India to parallel later Tests in the Ashes and this series.

Forecast for Galle looks even grimmer than London, with monsoonal thunderstorms predicted all 5 days.

A duck for Williamson, that effectively adds a couple of wickets to the total...

A rare thing. But Taylor has stood up and is not far from a ton as rain stops play.

Taylor's Benn a decent workhorse for NZ. You can't complain with a century every five tests and a solid average ( nowadays anyway).

That series away against the Windies, despite the absence of Richards for the first test, probably meant the no1 spot was more deserved than most.
If ever a series was crying out for five tests it was that one.

That dyed-in-the-wool Kiwi Ajaz Patel gets a michelle to hand the advantage in the Test to the Sheep.

Handy 8th wicket stand has dragged Lanka to almost parity.

Very comfortable win for Lanka in the end, helped by a rare double failure by Kane W.
