Re: Corona Virus
Did my weekly shop for essentials this morning.
I was alarmed at how people are still rushing around in a panic to get stuff. And barely a mask to be seen and no regard for social distancing.
Wake up people.
I was giving everyone a wide berth AND I had a mask on.

Well still no masks evident up here but the social distancing seems to be mutually understood and universally practised. Guess the thing about being backward hicks manners were part of the deal too.

JGK wrote:15% GST would be a grouse outcome from the current shit sandwich. I reckon there will be a Virus Levy of 2% on the top tax rate for a couple of years as well.
Actually, the current situation is a great opportunity to fix some problems that were previously politically too hard to fix:
- increase GST
- Write down the NBN - will hit the budget but at this stage who cares if the deficit is $150b or $170b. That way, the government can lower the wholesale price and we might actually get an NBN service that is value for money
- Scrap the Superannuation Guarantee increase to 12%
- Call force majeur on the French Subs
- massively pull back on immigration - current Net we get 300,000 people a year from overseas. That was done to ensure that we didn't fall into a recession. Now that we'll have one anyway, no need to bring in low skilled workers and their families to keep wages low. Pull it back to 100,000 max.
- introduce domestic gas reservation to make sure power prices stay low - haven't been able to do that because the gas producers were going to complain. Do it now under the cover of national security;
- reduce reliance on overseas students by our universities (that one has probably solved itself anyway, foreign students ain't coming back for a while).
- reintroduce a carbon tax (OK, so that one won't happen...)
- include the home in the Pension Assets tests. At the same time, lower the Federal Govt reverse mortgage scheme (the Pension Loans Scheme) interest rate to about 2%.
How about converting the existing 9 pc to a wage increase of 7pc and using the 2pc leftover as a levy? Good idea at the time but successive govts of both colours seem to have messed around with it so much that it's not going to provide an adequate retirement income.
Oh and the subs thing. We haven't even got the final design and it's blowing out. Fark the French and the wretched procurement/policy process that led us down this path.

I've heard that masks are only effective for about 30 minutes. Don't know if its true or not.
Re: Corona Virus
Apart from the at risk crowd any masks should be saved for first responders of various descriptions. Just practise your SD.

Re: Corona Virus
A key issue is housing:
* Seems likely reality will bite the arse out of the magic pudding of the housing market esp in urban areas.
* The country has over invested in the pudding for generations with Oz's GDP overly reliant.
* Many people and companies are over geared.
* No doubt many housing investors (inc boomer mums and dads) will go the wall.
* Meanwhile I know a heap of young folk in good jobs who struggle to rent appropriate housing let alone purchase unless they do so with other people.
* More broadly many folk on low incomes or who are unemployed are in crisis (pre CV-19)
* I expect many investors will be forced to sell properties and prices will plummet. Banks may also force sales.
What will/should the Fed Government do?
* Slowly reverse over the next decade plus the failed 30 years policy supporting Rent Assistance to low income households and shift to providing capital for community controlled and public housing.
* Post WWII national reconstruction included significant public investments in construction of public housing (an important part of priming the war ravaged economy).
* Step in and force banks to accept public sector bids for mortgagee auctions in a market flooded by sales (including probable increased numbers of executor auctions).
* Owner occupied housing where the owner is bankrupt to be acquired and the owner remains the occupant on affordable rent.
* Rent freezes in the private rental market with possibly a forced rent reduction (with associated tax benefits).
* Introduce a tax on under occupancy by a house owner (maybe where there are 2+ spare bedrooms).
* Given we can forget about tourism for a probable long time, compulsory acquisition of failing hotel/motel chains at bargain basement prices by the public sector. Conversion of same into affordable singles/couples housing (the use in the next couple of years may have to await use of the premises to house CV-19 infected folk).
Just spit balling here folks.
* Policy objective must be to ensure Oz residents have access to secure, affordable and appropriate housing.

FMD & FFS.
Sydney's elite continue to thumb their noses at social distancing "laws".
Numerous Eastern suburbs yuppies were seen jumping police tape to go swimming at Coogee this morning. And the desperate need to sunbake is still showing up in Eastern Sydney parks. Really, people? Fine these pricks!!
What the fark is wrong with these farkers???

Actually theyre not recommended unless you're at risk and as they can't be reused are probably a waste of money.
If you want a cheap reusable option skulls a handkerchief rubbed with charcoal is probably more effective anyway. At the very least an excuse to bbq more often.

I've suggested that many times.
Mrs K has to go to an onsite job in Bondi Junction on Friday. She will probably wear a Hazmat suit.

Good point, Mr Dog.
Meanwhile, I see Philippines President Duterte says medical staff who lose their lives treating coronavirus patients are 'lucky' to die for their country.
My good friends on a WhatsApp forum (you all would know a few of them), who are currently treating it as a bash-the-fark-out-of-Scomo forum (stoopid Pinkos), should be grateful we don't have a leader like Duturte.
