What a pile of BS
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7287984.stm

Council tax and student fee rebates are suggested for people who volunteer - as well as a "Britishness" public holiday.

I take it this is Gordons latest effort to big up 'Britishness' in England whilst applying different rules for Scotland & Wales?

Why are we trying to be so much like the USA? Let's try to make the country good enough for our citizens to sing its praises vountarily without all this crap.

We can make a start by cutting out all this PC bollocks. Junior came home from his new nursery yesterday, and proudly announced that he had learned a new nursery rhyme - "Baa Baa PINK sheep" Evil or Very Mad

One of the thing that makes us British is our natural revulsion at anything pledge of allegiance like. I'm horrified.

We'd be better off with a pledge to Ian Bell.

Is it not anti-democratic to teach an allegiance to the monarchy in schools?

In a sense the Queen is the UK. The Armed Forces are sworn to her, not the Govt. The Police are hers too.

Not with a constitutional monarchy like ours.

Ken Livingstone today asked rhetorically what the authorities would do if children refused to swear an oath to the Queen, would they be deported he wondered.

Seems like an affront to free speech and freedom of expression.

Being British doesn't mean that you're a monarchist.

I pledge allegiance to Ian Ronald Bell, one man under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

I like it. Let's do that.

Yip.

If they want to do something then pledge allegiance to the UK as a country, not the forking queen. And as I already said... it seems this is intended for us Englanders rather than the other parts of the so-called Union.

I wouldn't be able to sing "God save the Queen" as I don't believe in either institution.

And my singing voice is not fit for public consumption...

What does it mean anyway, a "pledge"?

It's not legally binding is it? People could pledge with crossed fingers.

Perhaps then the next stage would be for the government to introduce lie-detectors to hook all these little kids up to during the pledge - just to be sure.

And they could read the results out on the Jeremy Kyle show and have that risible c*nt shout at them.

Yeah, he could be giving it to an 8-year-old: "Yeah, I nicked some sweets when I was an 8 year old school child, doesn't mean it was right. I learnt the error of my ways, and you haven't? Coh. Well, sir, that makes you a c*nt!"

Silly supercillious, trite, hypocritical little shit. Deserves pummelling with a 12 inch purple dildo. I was going to say dilod. Sounds better.

I recall aged about six, I got in a lot of trouble for refusing to bow my head during the saying of grace before school lunches.

'But I don't believe in God!' I squeaked. I was sent to the head teacher anyway. Grossly unfair, seeing as it's not like I was in a christian school. In the end, a compromise was reached whereby I'd bow my head anyway and just pretend like a good boy.

I move that children should just be issued with this kind of guidance and everything will be alright. I turned out fine, after all.

For now. But you'll burn in hell when you pop it.

But given that heaven's likely to be full of Christian types, I don't see why anyone would want to spend eternity there anyway...
