Forum Indians . . .
are this guys threats serious, or is he just over-reacting (I know that's something Indians don't generally do)?
Bishnoi Sabha wants Dhoni's removal from Indian cricket team
SIRSA, March 13: The Akhil Bhartiya Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha on Wednesday demanded immediate ouster of One-day and Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for sacrificing an animal.
Abjrbs District President Raj Kumar Beniwal appealed to BCCI President Sharad Pawar to remove Dhoni from the Indian team with immediate effect and warned if the Jharkhand player was not shown the door, the Bishnoi Sabha would drag the cricketer to a court of law.
"He committed a sin by sacrificing a lamb after fulfillment of his vow," Beniwal said.
He claimed the Bishnois could go to any extent for saving trees and animal life anywhere in the country.
He asserted that it was at the behest of Bishnois only that actor Salman Khan had to go behind bars for killing a black buck.

Hey, that's a nice name for a forum cricket team.
Clearly over-reacting. The courts will ask him to STFU.

From wikipedia:
The Bishnoi guys seem to have had a role in bringing the crime to light, but the real reason there was that it was an endangered species.
Like most wild animals, the Blackbuck is in principle protected in India by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Its protected status has gained publicity through a widely reported court case in which one of India's leading film stars, Mr. Salman Khan, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for killing two black bucks and several endangered chinkaras. The arrest was prompted by intense protests from the Bishnoi ethnic group, which holds animals and trees sacred, and on whose land the hunting had taken place.

It is extremely silly to kill hapless animals just because your vow is fulfilled.

Re: Forum Indians . . .
The Bishnoi community people don't joke about such traditional matters which encompasses worshipping and preserving nature. I pretty much expect Dhoni to do rounds of courts over this soon enough. Some regional court in some backward district will even take the case up. Some tribal communities here are very sensitive about environment and nature worship with a strong commitment to protecting trees and animals.
That said, I find it ridiculous that people in this age still think of sacrificing animals as a way of reaching God or a prayer to seek divine intervention to achieve blessings or some goals. Dhoni after all the international exposure surely didn't need to do this. He is a role model to youngsters who will now not find such feudal practices of animal sacrifice and other such matters as unacceptable. At a time when 60% of India is still trying to come out of traditional feudal mindsets, we don't need guys like Dhoni re-inforcing such beliefs and sponsoring such banal acts of barbarism.

As far as I saw in the news lamb was sacrificed long after Dhoni left the temple.tac wrote:SG wrote:Though this doesn't mean that I condone Dhoni's act in this case.SG wrote:Just an attempt to get cheap publicity at Dhoni's expense.

So who knows? Might be a case of sensationalising this case by linking Dhoni with it.

PLENTY of animals are sacrificed everyday in temples all across India. This is an issue only because Dhoni is a soft target for orgs looking for cheap publicity.

Not in mainstream Hindu temples though. I don't know about the north, but in the south it is mainly in temples for special "tribal" gods and goddesses. They keep poppin up ya know ...

Lovely lamb/ goat dish, popular in the hilly region of North India. Spelt Kachmoli (or something like that).
Almost raw meat (barely smoked), but farking amazing taste.

Care to back up your statement ?
AFAIK it's only a practice in a certain temple in East (Kamakhya-Assam), and temples in Garhwal (nearabouts where Dhoni originally comes from) and some tribal/animist ones in South.
Re: Forum Indians . . .
No Buck.
This regularly happens during Durga-Pooja when few goats are sacrificed to the Goddess by some devotees who got out of some kind of trouble in their life and when in trouble they'd have asked that if the Goddess helps them get over that trouble they'd sacrifice a lamb or goat!
People call it "mannat" in Bihar.
And in the temple of Goddess Kali, this happens regularly.
But Vikas, tell me is it okay to eat red meat? If yes, then how on earth are you going to get it without killing the animal?
And does eating meat make all the non-vegetarians barbaric?

Re: Forum Indians . . .
AFAIK It's not part of Vedic/dharmic traditions ..
From what I have seen, whenever there the need arises to sacrifice a lamb according to ancient vedic scriptures brahmins do this
This rice powder paste modelled as a lamb (Pishta-Pasu) on the baked plantain leaf will be hard-baked after folding the leaf edges. Parts of the figure will be cut out and ritualistically offered to fire-god (Homam), with the assumption that it is truely a lamb.
The Yaaga-Saala is set on fire.
