What's wrong with a good animal sacrifice anyway?

besides the fact that it is barbaric ...
animal sacrifice and consumption of meat has been rendered obsolete in dharmic traditions after the era of the first 'Adi' Sankaracharya who inculcated a lot of buddhist traditions into hinduism.

This regularly happens during Durga-Pooja when few goats are sacrificed to the Goddess by some devotees who got out of some kind of trouble in their life and when in trouble they'd have asked that if the Goddess helps them get over that trouble they'd sacrifice a lamb or goat!
People call it "mannat" in Bihar.
And in the temple of Goddess Kali, this happens regularly.
But Vikas, tell me is it okay to eat red meat? If yes, then how on earth are you going to get it without killing the animal?
And does eating meat make all the non-vegetarians barbaric?
I don't eat meat or non-vegeterian food and I think killing animals to devour them when more natural options are present is a cardinal sin as well. My views don't have anything to do with my friends who eat them. I keep my views to myself and abide by a vegaterian diet all the same.

It's pefectly natural for carnivores and omnivores to eat meat. It's a an ethical choice to be a vegetarian not a 'natural' one.

Difference between theory and real life is that the latter has a miserable habit of doing its own thing. I suggest you read the last Census Of India. You may be surprised.

The earliest Aryans, the so called fountainhead of Hinduism, probably were beef eaters.

Marwaris don't? You're kidding. The Gujjus who don't are most probably Jains. And what about the Brahmins?

physiologically, humans are designed to consume animal protein . . . it is what helped us develop larger brains than our antecedents.

Re: Forum Indians . . .
About a third of Indians practice vegetarianism. IMO, It is a personal choice. That said it is imperative to make sure that the animal does not suffer. In the case of these animal sacrifices that is not the case. All the rubbish that goes around before the killing including the sharpening of the instrument in front of the animal can do no good. Plus I believe that the public outing of blood and guts desensitizes the minds of the onlookers. It is not a co-incidence that some of the worst human right abuses including public killing in the name of local justice happens in Bihar and Jharkand where animal sacrifice is still very much in vogue. In general these happen mostly in these areas where there are big pockets of self righteous religious zealots. Interestingly it is these areas where most of the "untouchables attrocities" still continue.
On the subject of should humans eat meat or not. If one looks at our closest animal cousins i.e. the prime mates it is a mixed bag. Most of them are vegetarian and once in a while indulge in some meat. The Chimp which is perhaps the closest to us eats red meat including other primates but the percentage of that with respect to the overall diet is low. In controlled experiments, Chimps were fed considerable amounts of red meat. This was well in excess of their quota in the natural world. The end result was that most of them ended with bowel cancer.
One vital difference between the digestion systems of natural carnivores ie. lions, tigers etc. and prime mates is the length of their intestines. The carnivores have much shorter intestines which means that the meat passes through rather quickly unlike the prime mates where the meat stays for lot longer making it a breeding ground for toxins.
That said there is no clear cut answer here. One aspect most agree is that consumption of blood increases the survival instinct meaning that it is very likely to bring out the primal instincts. Again no-coincidence that several religious doctrines forbid the drinking of blood.

Hmm, and why is that your opinion? You can back it up yourself with a few reasons.

I eat meat but I haven't seen a convincing moral or ethical argument in favour of it. Probably because there isn't one. I'd like to try vegetarianism some day but I doubt I'd be able to do it.

Don't bother, don't think you could either, but yeah it's nature if you get thrown infront of a hungry lion it won't think twice before munching you down.
I can understand why people would do it for diet/health but not for an ethical reason, you just have to accept it's the food chain and it's part of life.
