So, Gilly's considered a 'spiv' then?

he debuted for the bluebags and thus meets the criteria for the HoF

The Cricket Archive website includes both Tasmania and Wellington in the FC records for McDonald and Grimmett, respectively.

What Australian FC competition were Tasmania and NZ involved in at that time?

The update in fact had Wood and Veletta in it. He considered Moody, but thought the combination of Wood and Veletta might really ignite the team.

Don't know when Tasmania's FC status was granted but it must have been decades before it joined the Shield.

I think Bob Simpson was a wozzie when he first made the Australian team.

Tasmania have had FC status since 1850/51 when they played in Australia's original first class match (against Victoria).
BTW Bert Ironmonger made his FC debut for Queensland.

Re: Is this the best domestic team of all?
Agreed, peter, but there was no FC comp for McDonald to represent Tasmania in at that time, they played only a couple of games a year ... usually against Victoria. He moved to Victoria in order to get FC competition, and was playing for Victoria when first selected for Australia. Similarly Grimmett was playing for Victoria when he was first called up for Australia.
By your definition above, Cosier, Rod Hogg and Watson are Victorians (though they were playing for other states when first selected), Colin Miller is a Sozzie, Trevor Chappell is South Australian (though he hadn't played for them for over 5 years when selected for NSW and later Australia). It just depends on your definitions of 'origin'.

saw a year of him at Essex in 87, distinctly average considering he was hyped up with Donald
Mind you like Steyn, his FC stats suggest we never saw the best of him.

I seem to recall he picked up an injury there and was never the same

Unfortunately Page makes crocinfo's top 10 worst overseas signings

10 Hugh Page
In 1987 Essex were the reigning County Champions but were without Allan Border, their leading run-scorer from the previous season. His overseas replacement was Hugh Page, a South African pace bowler who, according to Wisden, "was constantly called for no-balling ... and found that bowling a consistent line and length was a demanding task in English conditions". He took 25 Championship wickets at 33. It was a bad summer for Essex, whose captain, Graham Gooch, had a miserable early-season spell when he made two pairs in three matches.

Grimmett played his first test in 1924/25. He had moved to South Australia at the start of that season.

Oh well, nail in the coffin there. Thanks Wally. Who was Ironmonger playing for when he was selected fror his first Test, then? I didn't even know he'd played for Queensland.

Ironmonger was playing for Victoria when he made his test debut. However the original post in this thread stipulated that the team selection was based on which team they playing for when they made their FC debut.
Dainty was a Ipswich boy. Pine Mountain. Played 5 games for Queensland before the war, then moved to Victoria.
