According to news reports on the BBC:

"After a great deal of thought and soul-searching we have decided to end Michael Vaughan's reign as England captain" Geoff Miller declared, "With respect to his successor, we decided put faith in our usual selection process, and the ball that came out of the bag was a ginger one."

Joyce is a good call, as he combines Pietersen's not being English with Key's lack of ability at the top level. The selectors must surely have considered him.
