Two Bigfoot hunters who claim to have captured the mythical creature in the US state of Georgia have admitted to filming an interview with a fake scientist to give their story credibility.

Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer announced this week they had found the body of the mythical ape-like creature, releasing a photograph on their website and saying they had DNA evidence to prove their claim.

News of the so-called Bigfoot discovery has gained wide publicity in the US and around the globe, but many experts have already poured cold water on the find.

Whitton and Dyer promise to hold a press conference early tomorrow where they will supposedly reveal all about their find.

In the hoax video uploaded to YouTube Mr Dyer interviews a supposed scientist, introduced as Dr Paul Van Buren, who claims to have examined the Bigfoot corpse.

"It's obviously a male. We looked at a very, very large primate male. It doesn't fit into any of the taxonomic groups I can think of," he says in the video.

But in a further video subsequently uploaded on YouTube, the pair were forced to concede Dr Van Buren was in fact Mr Whitton's brother, Martin.

In the video Mr Whitton said the fake interview was filmed to stir up those in the "Bigfoot world" who had been hassling and stalking the pair.

"I'm just tired of all the stalkers so I had my brother, 'Dr Van Buren', come down ... I'm just glad you all had something to do on the weekend," Mr Whitten says on the video.

Whitton and Dyer insist the Bigfoot discovery is real, despite the admission, and say they plan to go ahead with the press conference tomorrow.

In an interview with the website Scientific American, prominent Bigfoot researcher Jeffrey Meldrum said he was "extremely skeptical" about the claim.

"I've had interactions with Tom Biscardi [the Bigfoot hunter holding the press conference] in the past, and based on that history, I would say that anything he is involved in is suspect," he said.

"The fact that the two Georgian men turned to him and not anyone with scientific credentials is very questionable."
