ICC turning cricket into baseball....
According to Javed Miandad:

Ah well, real cricket or not, a billion will enjoy it. I'm off to two conferences this week, lucky for me they are from Tuesday.
Bye all and may Pakistan win a tight, close match
arachi - Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has warned that the continued promotion of Twenty20 cricket poses a threat to the traditional bastions of the sport, particularly at test level.
"They (the International Cricket Council) are turning cricket into baseball. In their bid to further commercialise and globalise the sport they are ruining its traditional character and spirit," Miandad told Reuters on Sunday.
"This is not the cricket we played and are aware of. Winning any tournament is a achievement for any team but this is not real cricket,"
he said.

Javed is the last person to preach about the traditional character of the game.

As long as there is plenty of Test cricket around then cricket is in good shape.

How is it like baseball? You don't see baseball games where 20 home runs is par for the course.

Yeah, but Zat, why is that a problem? Fans of 'proper' cricket know 20/20 crickets limitations, but as a way of introducing the sport to non-cricket fans, or 'dummies' as you like to call them, it has no equal.
Bums on seats, counties making money (except Worcester-by-the-sea of course), kids the world over suddenly wanting to play the game. What's wrong with that?

Kids will suddenly want to play T20, not Test cricket.
I have no problem with T20 if it is played sparingly or by dedicated T20 squad from each country and not the test squad ie: if it is like the World 7s rugby tour then great.

- you need beer and dancing girls to make it interesting
- each individual match is meaningless in itself
- it is for people who can't appreciate the subtelty and beauty of One Day cricket
- etc

Same here.I have no problem with T20 if it is played sparingly
Too much of Twenty20 will make it as boring and monotonous as deluge of ODIs has done to the ODIs.

Kids growing up on T20, I think, will certainly discover the challenges of Test cricket later in their life. Hopefully they'll figure that out when they try to play first class matches and see that they can't last 20 balls.
P.S. There are no dancing girls in baseball.

Dancing girls and gimmicks were part of the package when 20/20 was introduced over here. Most counties have now dropped them as the cricket sells itself.

Re: ICC turning cricket into baseball....
We've done this topic before:
T20 = drag racing
Test Cricket = Le Mans 24h
I find drag racing fun to watch on TV but I've never been to a race day. I've been to the LM24h about 7 times. ;)
However, as a fan of test cricket I am worried that more scheduling time will be given over to T20 as it will make more money.
Anyway, T20 is far more exciting than baseball.

Yeah Zat, of course. Because nowadays kids play Test matches. It's not like they play Twenty20....
Re: ICC turning cricket into baseball....
When you play backyard Tests you can bat forever which teaches you to build an innings ...and forces you to improve your bowling otherwise you will never get a hit ...
Backyard T20 will just be slogging and bowling until its your turn to bat again
Long Live the Back Yard Test Match

Nothing - that's why we shouldn't defile them with T20 cricket.

Re: ICC turning cricket into baseball....
I don't object to occasional 20/20 games either. Some of the funnier stories I've heard about a cricket match came from the RSA match in Brisbane in early 2006 (Shaun Pollock apparently acted up the whole 20 overs).
But this World Cup has been the most irrelevant thing... I've never taken less interest in a multinational cricket tournament.

Really? Well, you must be easy to please if you thought the CWC07 was anything but a boring, formulaic load of dragged out sh!t.
Re: ICC turning cricket into baseball....
It's a relative thing...
And besides, the CWC had Dwayne Leverock.

Well, it is a relative thing and the WC was more boring, relatively speaking. If Bermuda had pulled their socks up, T20 could've had big Dwayne as well!
Re: ICC turning cricket into baseball....
I'm a convert.
Not from Test cricket, which will always be THE game.
But when you compare Twenty20 to One-Day cricket... well, Twenty20 is just more fun.
I had a lot of fun watching this tournament. There were plenty of close finishes - something we seem to get once every blue moon in 50 over matches.
I'm a purist at heart. But I never forget why we play and watch the game - to have fun.
Twenty20 has got my interest and I think we should embrace it.
Cheers.

Great post Hass. This form of cricket definitely = fun (even in County encounters)
