Will cricket become our baseball?
A heinous thought, but just watching some very interesting insights from Glenn Turner during the break in the NZ/Eng Test.
Of course, all of us here are true Test cricket fans, and agree that nothing comes close to the ebb and flow of a 5 day game, nor do the short forms produce anything like the finishes of Test cricket (close wins, losses, draws).
But the likes of Turner and Athers say it's all very well to moan about how T20 cricket is destroying the Great Game, but unfortch, said great game needs to pay its way.
Also interestingly, Turner reiterated Atherton's view that it was a shame that T20 (formulated at County level) moved into the international arena. He felt that local franchises could've injected crowds and money into local cricket, but save the 50 over stuff for internationals. Interesting stuff.
So, is there a danger that the lack of crowds (not withstanding the Ashes sell outs in England) for Tests could kill off Test cricket and see us solely subsisting on a diet of ODIs, ODDs, T20s, IPL, and Big Bash stuff?? Just like Baseball, all over in a few hours??

I don't see it. TV needs content. Test cricket is about as good as you can get as as a content filler.

You need quite an attention span to take in T20 cricket.
F5 should be looked into. With a commercial break after every three balls to bring in the finance.
We could have an F5 World Cup up and running within 6 months. To be repeated on a monthly basis.
Let's jettison that boring long-winded shit of T20, and get down to some REAL wham, bam, thank you spam.

I probably have another 35 years or so on this planet. I wonder what the game will look like as I hobble into my 80s?
If you believe Red, we'll be playing Water Cricket.

We just call that cricket, in England, during April, May, June and July.

Re: Will cricket become our baseball?
If Test cricket disappears then so will the 50 over game. We could be left with a sport where players spend a couple of months a year representing an Indian franchise, likewise an English team, Australian team etc. and occasionally their country... would be like a footballer sharing his time between Barcelona, Man Utd, Bayern Munich and Juventus and having to choose when the Champions League came round! Teams and players would have no continuity or identity, the sport would soon be history outside the subcontinent I think.skully wrote:So, is there a danger that the lack of crowds (not withstanding the Ashes sell outs in England) for Tests could kill off Test cricket and see us solely subsisting on a diet of ODIs, ODDs, T20s, IPL, and Big Bash stuff?? I think I knew that.
I spent 4 days with some mates at Barnbougle/Lost Farm a couple of weeks back; Boags remains my conditioned response whenever I'm near any kind of tap.
