Hodge 'pissed off' with selectors.
I heard Brad Hodge interviewed just before in relation to breaking Deano's record and he was talking about how it's a double-edged sword because it means he hasn't played enough for Australia.
He then went on to say that weight of runs and favourable stats may mean nothing as they're others over there with inferior statistics. He said he's still coming to grips with missing out on selection in the original team let alone what this latest 'snub' means. He said that he'll learn to accept it as it's happened to him so many times before.
I suggest that if his cards weren't marked before, they are now.

So was the phrase 'pissed off' actually used, as suggested by you putting it in quoie marks?

But on the plus side, he won't be able to damage his Test average of 55.

If I was him i'd be pissed off that i'm not good enough to be a test regular. You can tell that he'll become some sort of Neil Harvey clone. The man with the test average of 55 who constantly whines on about how he was "unjustly treated" by the selectors despite scoring what he'll term a "backs to the wall, stroke filled double century against a top class test attack" when in truth it was a second innings effort whilst setting a declaration target against a tired Saffie attack on an absolute road of a WACA pitch. Anyone who's seen this guy bat in even slightly tough conditions knows that he's not bad, but not quite good enough either, and that there are better players in his state side (D.Hussey) let alone the rest of Australia.

Re: Hodge 'pissed off' with selectors.
I agree with that summation Henry. He was dropped on 13 in that double ton knock and took advantage of a tiring attack as you say. There was later criticism that he didn't get to his 200 quickly enough and Punter was forced to delay his declaration which helped the saffers have less time in which to enforce the draw.
What really did him in though was his first innings dismissal in Sydney. After failing in Melbourne, he came to the wicket when he were poorly placed at 2 for not too many chasing in excess of 400. The saffers telegraphed that they were going to target what they saw as his weakness, short balls, and especially to the ribcage. Nel put one straight in the danger area and Hodge fended off to the man put in place to accept the catch. Critics said that night that he should have used his body to fend off the ball and cited the Steve Waughs of this world who would always take a blow for their country. He was subsequently not selected for the SA leg of the twin series.
When playing for the Bushies, he struggles if there's any early juice.

Trev, you can be awfully sage when you take the "I hate everything Australian" blinders off and just think logically.Henry wrote:If I was him i'd be pissed off that i'm not good enough to be a test regular. You are channelling my dear departed father in these comments. Podge is sh!te and should definitely have his cards marked by the NSP.

Hodge's a decent batsman, better than some of the rubbish Australia pick nowadays. But Dussey's the man who should be sat at the dining room table with all the kitchen utensils arranged in a circle around him practicing the ol' voodoo. Even I'm pissed that Dussey isn't in India.

Fair call on Hussey, Gus. But Podge is a classic flat track bully who has feet of cement. Test class bowlers just feed of dross like him.

Like I said, Hussey over Hodge. I'm also a wee bit surprised that Pomersbach hasn't been talked about a bit more. But after that, Hodge's a decent bat. An FTB - maybe. But aren't Katich, Clarke, Watson, Jaques, et al, very much the same?

MB may disagree, but Pomersbach is a bit of a strong arm merchant. Very powerful but yet to prove his consistency.Augustus wrote:Like I said, Hussey over Hodge. Hodge is by all means decent, but IMHO not Test class. Whereas Katich and Clarke have proven themselves at Test level (> 25 Tests, average around 40 or better). Watson is far from proving himself at this stage (loads of potential but little self-belief). Jaques looked OK (even good) on the flat hard Aussie decks but less assured away from home.

Re: Hodge 'pissed off' with selectors.
Hodge got to play Test cricket. He got to score a lot of runs in one innings, not many in the rest. His generally leaden footwork was exposed as not up to scratch, except on a roadly road.
Ironically, while he wouldn't normally be able to justify feeling hard done by, he should probably have played in the most recent Test in India. His stodgy batting might have been better suited to what was needed in the second dig.
But you can't pick a bloke on the basis that he's good on roads.

Yes I would pick David Hussey ahead of him. Unjustly treated, hmmmm well last summer he left Lancs in the lurch and it's payback time.

Suppose on current showing he's not even any good on roads.

MB would promote the opinion that if he was a spiv he would not have to prove his consistency. Just a whiff of potential would suffice.

I guess a whiff of potential was all the Watson required.
