He retires as the second greatest wickettaker in Test history.

A great career soured slightly by his struggles this year. Still, he gets to join the club of taking a wicket with his last ball.

wow, the end of an era has well and truly started. now we know what australia must have felt like at the end of the last ashes. i started watching cricket in the early 90s, so these guys have been there from the start

hope anil gets a proper farewell from the bcci at the start of the next test

Aye, a great servant of Indian cricket and arguably India's best ever bowler, other than perhaps Dev who was more the all rounder.

It still hasn't sunk in what it'll be like never watching Kumble in action again for India!! I just can't imagine how India will cope without this forever "go to" man!!

Thanks Anil for all these great moments in cricket. I'll NEVER forget them.

Wow. Strange feeling this.

Watching Kumble bowl has been a privilege really, brilliant in the 90s and a revelation in the 00s. He actually improved with his age. Kumble will probably be remembered most for playing on with a broken jaw, even more than the 10 wickets, more than everything else. That captures what playing for India, what that cap, meant to him. And that will be why he goes out as one of the most respected cricketers in the world.

Farewell Anil.

And head over to your nearest commentary box now, we really need you there.

You'd like to think that he would replace Shivaramakrishnan in the commentary box....

Word is that Ganguly has already been signed up by Sky sports for the England series.

Yeah, I thought something like that would happen as soon as I heard he was going to retire. Kumble will be getting offers soon as well.

Shit. Still can't believe I won't be seeing him in India colours ever again.

Can't say a bad word about him really - lovely chap and a real achiever.

Still can't quite fathom why his bowling has been quite effective as it was- always seemed a bit predictable, but what do I know?

No bowler in cricket history that I CAN think of has bowled with stitches on jaw, fingers, hands for the team and taken wickets. Yet he has to be called selfish by insignificant worms on this forum who know their cricket like the stain on the back of their pants.

Well played Champ. I am happy you retired gracefully even when you could have 'selfishly' played yet another test or series. It is a goof thing he took some wickets in his last outing as well as closed his career with a wicket.

I said before the start of this series that I thought we would be seeing Kumble bowl his last and my fears have come true.

Man was always humble and I believe it when he said he planned to retire after this series. I am sure he didn't grandly announce his decision as he did not seek unnecessary publicity and too much unwanted adulation and focus to distract him and the team.

Well played and knocked Champ. Enjoy the bloody glorious sunset.

Reality check for India. Ganguly out, Kumble gone and now Dravid to follow soon [by the end of this series too I suspect, being just one more bad performance away from it]. The coming home series against England and Pakistan will show where India stands in the future. Feel a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. Fark it. No more Kumble taking his mark when next a test is played in India. NO MORE KUMBLE.

Embarassed pale

Moral of the story for the selectors: There is no thing like a 'phased' transistion in a team. You can't extend a senior's end days for the sake of a transistion just as you can't avoid their retirements if they know they can't hang in there anymore.
