Lilac Hill Festival Games
Teams Named For Lilac Hill Festival of Cricket
20/11/2008
Robin Smith and Trevor Penney, both of whom were born and bred in southern Africa but achieved cricketing fame in the UK, will lead the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI and WACA President's XI respectively in the first match of a Twenty20 double-header at this year's Lilac Hill Festival of Cricket, presented by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
45-year old Smith, who played 62 Tests and 71 one-day matches for England between 1988 and 1996, will take charge of a CA Chairman's XI that features Western Australian cricket legend Justin Langer, former WA paceman Peter Capes, plus several members of the WA Under 19s squad that will compete at the National Championships next month in Newcastle.
Penney, 40, is currently Assistant Coach of the Retravision Warriors after serving for 17 years with distinction for Warwickshire County Cricket Club. He was also Tom Moody's right hand man at Sri Lanka for two years upon his retirement. He will lead a WACA President's XI containing WA greats Mike Veletta and Jo Angel and members of the Retravision Warriors squad.
In a special treat for the thousands that flock to Lilac Hill for the annual Festival, 2000 Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin and dual Magarey Medallist Andrew Jarman will pad up for the CA Chairman's XI, while AFL premiership players Earl Spalding and Jarrad Schofield will done the whites for the WACA President's XI.
The trio will not be there just to make up the numbers – Woewodin is a former graduate of Kent Street Senior High School's cricket program, Spalding played four first class matches for Western Australia in 1984-85, and Schofield represented WA at Under 17 level and currently plays in the lower grades of the Retravision Shield with Wanneroo.
Jarman, who recently moved west to take on the senior coaching role at Perth Football Club in the Western Australian Football League, has led Gaza Cricket Club in South Australia to two premierships and is set to play some games for Retravision Shield club Mount Lawley later in the summer.
The Lilac Hill Festival of Cricket, presented by PricewaterhouseCoopers, takes place on Friday week, 28 November. Festivities begin with an opening ceremony at 10.00am, before the first Twenty20 match between the CA Chairman's XI and the WACA President's XI gets underway at 10.30am. Lunch will be held at the conclusion of that game, before the Warriors and Victoria do battle at 2.45pm in their final hit-out before departing for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament in India.
The Lilac Hill Festival of Cricket Committee has also announced that this year's special guests of honour, who will be presented to the crowd in a motorcade during the opening ceremony, will be former Western Australian and Australian opening batsmen Graeme Wood and Bruce Laird.
The pair opened together in 26 Test innings against some of the most fearsome fast bowlers in the history of cricket, and both play a role today in the Western Australian Cricket Association – Wood as Chief Executive Officer and Laird as a member of the State Match Committee.
General admission tickets, including reserved seats in the Vines Stand, are still available from Ticketmaster (1300 136 122 or ticketmaster.com.au) or from Slater Gartrell Sports in Midland (phone 9274 5788).

It's one of those quirky things that Bruce and Dennis would repeat ad nauseum if they were ...I've never heard them do it ...so I guess it's doubtful
...and Barry Jarman also captained Oz in a Test

Not as much of a draw as a traditional tour opener IMO.

Blame CA for organising a tour to India during the Oz season and then trying to squeeze 5 Tests into a seven week window ...
