WA Police have upgraded security at other metropolitan police stations after a deliberate fire attack at Joondalup police station last night. A Holden Rodeo ute, believed to be stolen, was reversed up to the front doors of the Reid Avenue complex and fuel in the car was set alight at 10.30pm.

The building, which was built in 1992, sustained significant damage in the alleged arson attack and the car was completely gutted, with just a charred shell remaining.

Up to 12 police officers, who were in the building at the time of the attack, fled the burning building.
They were uninjured.

Today, the police arson squad and fire scene investigators sifted through the burnt-out building in an effort to uncover forensic evidence to track the offenders.

The damage is concentrated to two offices, one of which was the inspectors' District Office.

The burnt-out ute was this morning taken away for forensic testing. Assistant Commissioner (north west metropolitan region) Dominic Staltari said security precautions had been taken at other stations in the wake of the attack.

But Mr Staltari refused to say if police had a ``person of interest'' or if surveillance footage from the police station, adjoining courthouse or nearby Dusk nightclub had captured those responsible.

``That information is operationally sensitive at the moment,'' he said. ``I'm not making any comment in relation to this being a specific target apart from there was a criminal act at this location last evening.

The inquiry will tell us what the intent and what the purpose of the offender was. ``It is a concern to us, but I'm not making any public comment on the intent or the purpose of the offender at this early stage.

He said it would take between three and four months to rebuild the damaged part of the building but staff would be back working at the station within two days. ``We hope to have the complex up and running, apart from that particular area, within 48 hours.

``This will not affect policing services in this patch aside from those people who want to come to this police station,'' he said. ``It's business as usual.''

He said anyone who needed to visit a police station could travel to other North West region stations including Clarkson, Wanneroo, Hillarys and Warwick. Insurance assessors will examine the building this afternoon to determine a damage bill estimate.

Warwick cop shop hit by car explosions

A second northern suburbs police station has been hit by explosions in the space of three days after two cars were destroyed outside the Warwick police station overnight.

Fire and rescue services were able to contain the flames and no one sustained any injuries, while there was no damage to nearby property.

Arson Squad detectives are investigating.

This latest attack follows an incident at Joondalup police station late on Monday night when someone backed a ute up to the station and set a 220-litre fuel tank on fire, destroying the reception area and adjoining offices.

Police do not yet know whether the two attacks are linked and inquiries are continuing.

ABC radio reported that cops from the Joondalup incident had been transfered to the Warwick station. Sounds like someone has it in for em. Probably a drug deal that went wrong. North of the river people are all crims anyway. Or bogans. Or both.
