Is Dale Steyn a great fast bowler?
Before you all scoff and say,"no chance", consider this- In an era dominated by batsmen, this man has one of the lowest strike rates and averages of any bowler to have ever played test cricket, and has taken wickets against all teams in all conditions.
A fast bowler averaging 22 in test cricket these days is the equivalent of a batsman averaging 60, imo.

he is a fantastic bowler...if his body holds up and his form continues he will go down as one of the greats

I don't think any scoffing is required. I think he is very much on his way to being a great Test bowler.Henry wrote:Before you all scoff and say,"no chance", consider this- In an era dominated by batsmen, this man has one of the lowest strike rates and averages of any bowler to have ever played test cricket, and has taken wickets against all teams in all conditions.

I had my doubts about him, but he has certainly convinced me he has the goods. Pace, swing, cut and accuracy.

he's the best fast bowler right now. to say he is a great is extremely premature

Aye TO. That was my reason for saying "he is on his way...".The One wrote:he's the best fast bowler right now. to say he is a great is extremely premature

I remember guys like Ambrose and Mcgrath being called "great" after having played a similar amount of test matches, so why not Steyn?

It's too soon to tell, but he's progressing nicely.

So was Ian Bishop and even Jason Gillespie so let's hold fire until he's played more than a couple of years.
But agree with the sentiments above - he is far and away the best quick at the moment and all signs point to him being a great.

Ryan Harris seems to be a good prospect for Aus

Hussey averages 60. I'm not sure that I'd call him a great yet.

From what I have seen of him he doesn't look so special. But it's hard to argue with his numbers against everyone except England.

Re: Is Dale Steyn a great fast bowler?
Yesterday he bowled exceptionally well, the odd slower ball with most other deliveries between 147 and 150 and he was swinging it and bowled an excellent line and length. Even given that it was one day cricket, it was the best I've seen him bowl since he smashed the kiwis 15 months ago.
Lawry was on before and he was singing his praises saying he's easily the best quick in world cricket and that it's no disgrace to go out to him.
He's very athletic and bowls with rhythm and hits the seam. His stamina is in direct contrast with Tait's lassitude.
I agree with Henry in that there's a paucity of fast bowlers featuring in world cricket and it's also an era of generally flat pitches. So to do what he's done is no mean feat. If he stays free of injury he should emerge as a great. Donald is convinced though that the big Morkel has more potential.

Is he a very good bowler feasting on largely average batsmen?

"great" involves a degree of longevity, the only element missing at this point.

Aye, otherwise - like Bruce Reid, Shane Bond, Ian Bishop - 'coodabeen a contender'.

You need to look a little harder, arseclown, because when watching him he looks 'so special'. What with his pace, movement and the amount he hits the stumps.

Funny... when watching him all I can think of is Sith Erfricans should lay off the 'British Teeth' stereotype a tad, and it t'aint limited to him either

He's certainly bowled consistently well this summer.
