I know there's been a discussion about him before but i'm just watching some videos of him now on youtube. This guy hasn't received enough credit for what he's already achieved in test cricket. I fear he will tear the English batting line up to pieces come the summer.

Best fast bowler in the world.

despite the hammering SA bowlers took, he ended with decent figures (an avg of 26 and a s/r of 48)...always the sign of a great bowler imo.

It's the mark of a very good good bowler to be effective on pitches like this one.

He was very raw when we last toured SA, and then promptly bowled a heap of gash for Essex the season after!

108 wickets @ 22 tells its own story though...

Yep he used to very raw, but in the last year or two has got his act together and is bowling as well as anyone else in the world. I think i said a while back on the channel4 forum that he's one to watch because his action is near perfect for a fast bowler.

Go on youtube and look at the yorkers he was bowling in the 20/20 versus West Indies. Unplayable stuff.

Also that bouncer to Cummings was vicious.

I don't know how to post youtube videos on here yet.

I still remember his ball to M Vaughan. It pitched on leg and middle and swung away to take the off stumps.

He has only played 60 FC matches, 21 of which have been Tests. He had only played 8 FC games when he made his Test debut. So he's really still learning about being a fast bowler.

Similarly, Morne Morkel has only played 21 FC games, 4 of which have been Tests. Once he realises that he is quicker than Steyn and develops a proper fast bowler's killer instinct to go along with his steep bounce, the two of them will be a sight to behold.

In this Ind/Saf series, the bowler opposites are Bhajji vs Steyn. In England it'll be Sidebottom vs Steyn.

20/20 versus West Indies

Current test match....he seems to have a knack of knocking the sumps out the ground.

Steyn cleaned up the tail, but it was Morkel who was consistently creating the very little trouble that the Indian batsmen faced. Massively unlucky not to get any wickets.

Nice action that seems to help his seam and swing. I'll be interested to see how he goes in Aus. The Aussie top 7 is considerably more fragile now, so he may do OK.

Absolutely. Hayden is old, Frog hasn't convinced me he is cast iron Test material, Punter showed this summer he is very fallible, Pup is hit and miss, Paris has ended his honeymoon, Roy will never be "Mr solid middle-order player" and who knows what Haddin will do.

Right...... :|

1. Whatever you say, it's still the best Top 6 in the world.
2. Have you seen Hayden play recently? He is back in run machine mode.
3. You set very high standards or you just like to do a bit of reverse woofing Smile

If we prepare pitches that aid the quicks, Steyn should do ok. I doubt they'll let him play at Perth though if it's returned to its former glory.

Call it reverse-woofing if you like PJ, but a very high standard was set by this great side for the past 10 years. The fact remains that this top 7 is nowhere near the class of many of the top 7s we've had in that time. I hope we keep producing but I fear we may come back to the field (as we did in T2 (I1) and T3 in the Indian series.

What field? Man, we could fall a few levels and still be high above the clouds.

A high standard has been set but I don't think you can judge a the team, on one mediocre series.

And T2 just went to show that the Australian team is more than the sum of it's parts which I think is the biggest difference between Australia and the ROW.

I think our top seven has declined and could easily be exposed by good pace and swing bowling as it was by the Indians at times during this summer. If guys like Clarke and Symonds are constantly coming in earlier due to the top order struggling they will be exposed at times.

Well we will just have to agree to disagree. I reckon our Top 6 is top class and will get better.

It seems being positive isn't the done thing anymore. 😢

Righto PJ, you stick to the line that our top 7 is still a gun. I prefer to recognise that we may not be as good as we have been for the past decade. Add the lack of a Warne-type genius and that spells less wins, and more draws and losses. That's the way I see it.
