World Cricket League Division Three
The ICC World Cricket League Division Three begins this weekend, in Buenos Aires.
The six teams involved are Uganda, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, PNG, Caymans and the hosts, Argentina. The tournament is a round robin, with the top two teams progressing to the World Cup Qualifier (WCQ) to be held in South Africa in April.
(The bottom two teams drop to Division 4, and the middle two teams remain in Division 3.)
The round robin is followed by a fifth place play-off, third place play-off and final, but these don't affect qualification for the WCQ.
Afghanistan has had an impressive campaign so far, not dropping many matches as they passed up through the lower divisions. Uganda have had some good results at the Associate Level recently.
-----------------------
The top two teams will join ten that have already qualified for the WCQ in April.
The twelve teams of the WCQ are split into two groups, as follows:
Group A Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Oman, Namibia, WCL Division 3 runner-up.
Group B Kenya, Netherlands, Bermuda, UAE, Denmark, WCL Division 3 winner.
Each group plays round-robin. The top four teams (ie the top two from each group) qualify for the World Cup in 2011. (After the round robin stage there are again various play-offs but they do not affect qualification for the World Cup.)

How long is it until Geraint Jones can play for Papua New Guinea? He sure isn't getting back in the England team, so why not?

He could always make the lunch, or become the lunch.

Day 1:
A fairly close one between the two most favoured teams, but Uganda 8/216 off 50.0 defeated Afghanistan 202 off 49.3. MOTM Kenneth Kamyuka took 5/36 and effected a run out.
HK trounced Argentina, dismissing them for 107 and bringing up the required within 30 overs. PNG, too, made easy work of the Caymans.

Day 2:
Afghanistan (201) defeated Hong Kong (188). HK's bowlers did well with the bat, adding 98 for the last two wickets, but not enough.
PNG beat Argentina in a low scoring match. Dikana was the main performer for PNG with the ball, with his second five-for of the series. Uganda beat Caymans by 9 wickets.

Actually where he grew up is one of the few places in the world that may have practiced cannibalism. They also like their beer.

PNG have effected an upset of sorts versus Uganda. The man for them today was not Dikana, but Brazier, taking 4 for 16.
Hong Kong posted a comfortable but expected win against the Caymans.
Afghanistan managed a somewhat narrower win versus Argentina, and with Uganda's defeat today, Afghanistan is in a good position to qualify for the WCQ. The bad news for them is that their captain has been suspended for two matches due to slow over rates in the match against Hong Kong.

Re: World Cricket League Division Three
Round 4:
Afghanistan defeated PNG soundly, bringing up the required 94 runs in only 15.4 overs, which helps their NRR.
Uganda (180) managed to dismiss HK just one run in arrears in the 50th over. Kamyuka did the heavy lifting again, 37 runs off 46 balls and 4/21 from 10 overs.
Cayman islands pulled off a six wicket victory against hosts Argentina, who are not looking like winning a match in this tournament.
The table, then, looks like this with one round to come:
Afghanistan 6
PNG 6
Uganda 6
HK 4
Cayman Islands 2
Argentina 0
Cayman Islands and Argentina will definitely be at the bottom of the table and hence are relegated to Division 4.
There will be a rest day, followed by Round 5. The remaining matches are:
Uganda v Argentina
Afghanistan v Caymans
PNG v HK
On form it seems very likely Uganda and Afghanistan will win those matches, but PNG v HK should be close.

Aye. By all accounts the Ugandan U19's side that played in the U19 WC last year had some fairly useful younguns in it, so can see them breaking into the Denmarks etc... of the cricketing world!
