He should be set for his debut in t20i and 50 over stuff then.
Oh, hang on, he won't have the spiv media pushing for another GCS elevation.

... only other thread I could find, again highlighting his batting credentials (not ever an all-rounder, really, though he has been working on his bowling to give an 'option', like Moody did)

Re: Mitchell Marsh ....
Well he averaged mid 20s with the bat in first class cricket until he hit consecutive centuries against second division County second XI bowling attacks. a couple of weeks ago.
Frankly, like so many other Australian cricketers who come onto the scene young, I think he is overrated. Has potential, but then so do quite a few other cricketers around the world the same age (or even younger) than him.
Let's settle down. His older brother is a classic example of talent and potential perennially unfulfilled. Shaun is now 32, yet he still gets talked about like the eternally young prodigy with "potential" who is "on the verge of showing what he's capable of". Same with Shane Watson. And Australian selectors have been seduced by it for years.
Meanwhile guys who actually PERFORM like Chris Rogers (until he was picked in 2013 at 36), James Hopes, and even James Faulkner (in test cricket) get ignored for higher honours because they aren't labelled "the chosen one" from an early age. And I'm sure it also helps to have a former Australian player (and coach) as your father when it comes to selection meetings.....

Re: Mitchell Marsh ....
He is a (batting) work in progress; I agree.
If he winkles a few opposing batsmen out as well, that's a bonus.
He's exactly what you might look for at number 6.
Doug Walters, Steve Waugh, Keith Stackpole, Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Damien Martyn, Allan Border, and a host of other players we think of now as batsmen who bowled a bit all came into the Test side as all-rounders. I think Ian Chappell and Keith Stackpole debuted in the bottom 4-5 of the batting list, Walters was at 6 and bowled at first change, as did Steve Waugh. Mark Waugh was known to open the bowling for NSW in his early years.
I'm not saying he will be a champion; but unless you see a McGain-like performance, you can't really write young players off too early.
Equally I'm amazed that there is so much talk of Lyth being dropped so soon after he made good runs in the series against NZ, in what most English pundits - here at least - touted so loudly as 'a great series played in adventurous spirit against a great team'.

Re: Mitchell Marsh ....
I'm wrong about Ian Chappell, who did debut at #3 in 1964, as well as bowling a lot of overs ... it was later, in 1966, on Stackpole's debut, that we had Walters at 6, Ian Chappell at 7, and Stackpole (on debut) at 8; and functioning as our 3rd, 4th, and 5th bowlers.
I don't think anyone would contend that these 3 players were all-rounders in the classical sense.

Re: Mitchell Marsh ....
3 threads for this guy? If his career takes off can we create a separate forum just in appreciation of him.
Back to your point above lard - I see what you're driving at and it sounds reasonable to me. I guess I've got into the mindset of the best Aussie team I've ever seen being 3 pacemen and a leggie and not needing a batting all-rounder type. That team set-up and ability though is probably unlikely to come around too often (only on rare occasions do I recall either Katich, Symonds or even Punter getting the ball). So presumably the current team needs options as their main attack just isn't as potent as that lot were. So Mitch's strong suit - bat, and become a solid 5? And bonus of 8-10 proper overs a day - ability to keep it tight when needed but also ability to strike too?

Nothing wrong with a straight break as long as the opposition thinks you can actually spin the ball
