Here's something else for you to consider.

How about in ODI's replace the toss with an "auction". Each captain says how much of a lead he'd offer the other side in return for the chance to bat first, (or in other circumstances, to bowl first.) If side A bids a 45 run lead and side B bids a 55 run lead then side B bats first....but the chase, for side B, starts with the score at 55 without loss.
