Re: South Africa vs Australia, 3rd Test, Cape Town, 19-23 March
Because I'm hard at work and can't be farked checking, can JGK or skull let me know the quickest players to 1000 runs/100 wickets? Midge will get the 100 wickets in his next test or 2, and he can't be much more than 250 runs away from a 1000 (haven't checked . . .) . . .

Pretty sure Kapil has that record. He did it within 18 months of his debut IIRC.

Fastest in matches:
GA Lohman in 16 Tests
Fastest in time:
Kapil Dev 1 year 105 days (25 Tests!!!)

I think the winner of the fastest to 1000 runs/100 wickets double would have to be Beefy. He completed the double in 2 yrs and 33 days in his 27th Test.

So Midge has 5 tests v the unwashed to get 6 wickets and about 250 runs (roughly) . . .
Ah, just checked. He only has 694 runs, so fark all chance of beating Beefy . . .

Midge has 21 Tests and 1 year 135 days under his belt. But while he is on 94 wickets, he is still on only 694 runs. But to beat Beefy in time he still has 262 days, but only 5 Tests to beat the number of Test Beefy did it in.
306 runs in the Ashes maybe is a big ask for Midge, but he should be the quickest in time to the double.

I know - I just wanted the Bitter old vomit to make a fool of himself again.
I really hope that both you and skully are in a position after the ashes to get stuck into me with many I told ya so's about the choker and haddit...I have no wish to be proven right...fleas does not win matches - at best he contributes to draws (eg India and WI)...he has certainly lost them through inept batting displays and through his fingers...

Re: South Africa vs Australia, 3rd Test, Cape Town, 19-23 March
Actually, now being on my home broadband instead of my sh!thouse dial-up speed work network, JGK was right about Kapil.
He completed the 1000 run/100 wicket double, remarkably, in his 25th Test, v Pak at Eden Gardens in January 1980, just 1 year and 103 days after his debut. He took 2-65 to go to 100 wickets and scored 30 in the 2nd innings to go past 1000 Test runs.
So Midge is farked on on the time front and needs to score 306 in his next 4 Tests to equal Kapil Dev's fastest to the double in number of Tests.
Stoopid Dickinfo doesn't even list Dev in the fastest to 1000 runs list (which it clearly should), and the list goes down to players who took 30 Tests to get to 1000 runs.

Hmm, stats from the just completed series:horace wrote:I really hope that both you and skully are in a position after the ashes to get stuck into me with many I told ya so's about the choker and haddit...I have no wish to be proven right...fleas does not win matches - at best he contributes to draws (eg India and WI)...he has certainly lost them through inept batting displays and through his fingers...
SM Katich: 3 Tests - 6 innings - 260 runs - average 43.33 - 1 x 100 - 2 x 50. 4th highest aggregate in the series from both sides combined. I'll take that average in the Ashes if you can guarantee it, h. And he contributed heavily to the 2nd Test win with his ton in the 184 opening stand with Phews that set up the match.
Granted Haddit's keeping needs to sharpen and his 165 at 33.00 (1 x 50) could be better, but still shat on Boucher's 62 runs at 12.40.

How many runs did Haddin make in the series if you deduct the byes he conceded with the gloves from his runs tally with the bat?

He did just score 255 in 5 innings against a better attack than what England will have for him.

Midge will struggle when the ball moves in the air.

Of that lot, he'll probably struggle most with Anderson.
Hoggard and Sidebottom might trouble him, too.
I don't know enough about Khan to dismiss him entirely ... it's not as though he had an absolute Bryce McGain of a debut.

There's the slimmest of slim chances that Simon Jones will be fit as well. England have nothing to lose. If Jones is fit and bowling well for his county, he should be picked by england without hesitation.

Even fellow Victorian Darren Pattinson managed to find a length on his debut.
Poor old Bryce McGain will go down in history as "that old leggie who got carted everywhere in his only test match." He'll probably make a fortune on the public speaking circuit......

If CoJones isn't fit enough to bowl then make him 13th player and put him in charge of the mints

Shahadat Hossain went for 101 off 12 overs on debut - a slightly worse RR to McGain but in quite a few less overs.
